Actually, if you look at the Header details, you will observe that the line played in this game is the Dutch (Defence), Korchnoi Attack. The A80 is, I believe an ECO (Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings) reference code.

I'm not so sure... It might have been interesting to get some insight into White's approach to this game - assuming he did have some coherent idea about what he was doing. The text move prevents ...Bb4, which actually looks quite a desirable move for Black. After this, Black might have a slight lead in development, but does it amount to much?

I recall reading, a long time ago, that though this looks good and desirable, Black didn't often get a lot of joy out of this Fianchetto in the Dutch. The reasons for this were rather obscure...

... I believe iondowman that answer may lay in pawn structure, Whites move 3.Nc6!? or (?!) with the idea of 8...Nd5 or 8...d6 with 9...Nb-d7 and 10...Nd5. My intuition feels as if white should be playing for the e4 square is that wrong? Oh- 3.c4 for white is more solid.

8....a6 keeps the long light diagonal open & lets your knight go to c6.

Whose is the "depressingly miserable" pawn structure? White seems to be a reasonable shape here. Black's pawn structure makes a rather odd impression, but the closed-in bishop won't stay that way for long...

Sometimes you have to "think the unthinkable". 12.Nb1 looks middling horrible, but ought to be considered. But how about 12.Na4!?

13. B-d2 pins & attacks b4. 14. axb4 is threatened.

Possible was 15.f3 to drive away the e4-knight. Also 15.Nf4!? Bxf1 16.Nxe6, though whether White has much for the material investment looks problematical.

This is what can happen when the pressure builds up enough. White had to endure the cosh: 18.Nf3 c4 19.Ba2 c3!? (this can probably wait, with advantage) 20.bxc3 bxc3 and White is enmeshed in a powerful bind on the Q-side.

What was against 29.Kf1, then? After 29...Nd4 White's position is rather tangled, true, but it's hard to see Black holding, after, say 30.Qb6.
