I'm not too au fait with the Sicilian - I play the c3 variation as white, and the French as black - but I think this is the wrong square for the bishop. It can be easily hit with a6 and b5, and blunted with e6. So very early, black can take advantage of white's piece placement. 2. Nf3 is the main line, followed by 3. d4

The move is playable, but does have a downside - well, two, really. First off, Black simply blocks off the diagonal to f7 by playing ...e6 within a move or two. Second, as Black is likely to want to play ...a6 and ...b5, he has a ready-made target at c4 to help him on his way. It is more usual to delay this bishop development for a more opportune moment, or until it becomes clearer where this bishop should go. At that. d3 or e2 are more usual deployments.

d4 was called for. Break the position open and make it exciting! White's structure here is very typical of beginner-level play - sure, all the pieces are out just as you're supposed to do, and you've castled, but it's all too cautious.

White is playing a species of 'Closed Sicilian', but with his light-square bishop outside the pawn chain. I have a feeling this is not a desirable feature. An 'Open sicilian' calls for d4, usually played rather earlier than at move 6.

Where else was it going to go? This helps defend the king, and casts its eye down a long diagonal. A nice place for the bishop, and there's a reason this set-up is quite common.

The 'hole' created by the pawn at g6 constitutes a weakness, unless the bishop fills it. Then that constellation becomes quite strong (not invincible: there are ways of breaking it down). In addition, the bishop has a considerable influence upon the dark squares in the centre and upon White's Q-side. You'll see this kind of K-side fianchetto (and Q-side equivalents) quite often.

This is a bit risky - your bishop on c4 is running out of squares, and the long diagonal is dangerously weak. For example, black could try 8. ... Nxe4 here, though I don't think it's great - but it gives an idea of the tactics which could operate when you weaken the diagonal so much. After 9. NxN BxR 10. QxB, black has a rook and pawn for two pieces. The DSB is gone from the kingside defence, so black has major defensive problems (Bh6 is an immediate threat), so in this case it's not good, but it's now always hanging over black's position. Bottom line though - play with your pieces, not with your pawns. Pieces are stronger than pawns - so you need to focus on them more.

I agree with cdeburca: this is a very risky move, and will lose time at best. Black wants to play ...a6 and ...b5 anyway (whether he knows this or not), and if he gets to play that, you will find the c4-bishop trapped and lost.

This is a good move that will keep the bishop alive for long enough to escape betimes.

Attacks nothing unfortunately. I think I prefer Na5, getting rid of white's light-squared bishop. Though the position is still closed enough that maybe white's knights could compensate.

I was looking more at 9...Rb8, and to prepare a pawn thrust by ...b5. It might not be quick enough, though.

A knight on the rim is dim. The bishop can retreat to e3 or go to h6; either is grand. Meanwhile, black will have to waste time moving the knight again later.
