in these types of positions the best move is to solidify your centre. Here I suggest 4. ..e6 when any premature attack on f7 with fail. But I am sure black was thinking of the well known fork via 5. Nxe4 d5!? winning the piece back.

You guys might want to recheck what you say. 5.Nxe4 allows 5...d5 with 2 points down as White. I'm sacrificing a Bishop for a powerful attack and equality in material.

This move gives Black the bishop pair and completely concedes the center to Black. SUPP: To elyhim, I don't really think of 4...Nxd5 as an attack, but a combination to equalize. Your line (5.O-O Nd6 6.Bb3 Be7 7.Re1=) would seem to justify ...Nxd5 as Black has equalized. After 4...d6 Black, while solid, doesn't seem to have equalized yet. Am I missing something?

Trapping the Rook but also Black is going to want to try attacking, but if played correctly, White wins. @blake78613 you're assuming that Steintiz is a supercomputer just because you're specifying rules that you think are alway true, but yet they always have exceptions! Look at Fischer, he won playing 5.Bxf7 in his games with this opening! Think before you speak; just think that everything has its exceptions, you can't just say that things have to go this way. Have you ever connected chess to life? This demonstrates my point about a public opinion or rumor or saying. You may think (and many others) that a move wins, but think for another two minutes here and you'll find it's no longer true if it is harmful or ineffective. This is also true here.

You need to read your Steintiz. better is Ng5+, which I assume is the other move that you referenced not making.

No, the idea is to keep going with the attack. If not, the Bishop sacrifice is to some extent wasted.

7.Ng3 is much better than either Knight to g5 after which Black would be winning. Black has an edge after 7.Ng3, his bishop pair and strong mobile pawn center more than make up for his loss of the right to castle. SUPPLEMENT: Again Bxf7 is not a sacrifice, but an inferior way to regain your pawn. White is not currently attacking, An attack is a commitment of forces directed at a target. Capturing when you were going to lose a piece that anyway, is not a commitment or a sacrifice. While White may have dreams of attacking, he is not currently attacking and would be wise not to attack until he stabilizes the center.

e4 is much better. Black gets to continue marching pawns down the board and you are forced to move away. This move would completely open up blacks pieces to an assault on the king. Your knight would be forced to move back to g1, stifling all of your advancement, and allowing a huge force to come into play against your position. I think that if black had played e4 you would be in for a MUCH different game.
