3... a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 O-O 8. c3 d5	Marshall gambit



9. exd5	entering the main line. many players prefer, these days, the sidelines such as 8. h3 or 9. d4 or 8. a4 etc. in my opinion, the main line gives the most chances to both sides.



9... Nxd5 10. Nxe5 Nxe5 11. Rxe5 c6 12. Bxd5	not so popular, and for a reason. the bishop is much better than the knight. without the bishop it will be harder to pass a4 and to get the queenside advantage. moreover, the knught can be taken any time, what's the rush?
	1 comment archduke_piccolo (2334) on 21-Dec-07: Obviously hoping to deprive Black of a useful attacking piece and to isolate a Black pawn on d5. But the price is too high: one of White's two active pieces. Standard is 12.d4, freeing White's Q-side pieces.


12... cxd5 13. d4	a must. white has to free his queenside pieces...



13... Bd6	black plays the regular idea. pressure on the kingside.



14. Re3	I didn't like that move at the time. it seems to block white's bishop. moreover, the rook has got no aquare to be on the 3rd row due to black bishops.

14... Qh4 15. h3	15. g3 is worth thinking of...

15... Bf5	want to get the e4 square.



16. Qf3	white helps black here. probably 16. Nd2 was better.
	1 comment archduke_piccolo (2334) on 21-Dec-07: The suggested move would somewhat have cut across Black's planned occupation of e4. E.g. 16.Nd2 Be4!? 17.Nxe4 dxe4 18.Qg4 leaves White well enough placed.


16... Be4	there is a lot of pressure on g2, h3, h2 by black's bishops and queen.



17. Qe2 f5	with f4 and Rf6-Rg6. white is standing not so good...

18. g3	??? prevents f4 but what about the h3 pawn? apperantley the way out of this mess was to give the rook on e3: 18. Nd2 f4 19. Nxe4 fxe3 20. Nxd6 exf2 21. Kf1 Qg3 and still in the game.



18... Qxh3 19. Nd2	the end.
	1 comment archduke_piccolo (2334) on 21-Dec-07: Overlooking the immediate mate, but what defences are available? 19.Rxe4 fxe4 stops the mate, but at the cost of the Exchange and Black still has a tremendous attack, threatening ...Rf3. A possible finish might be: 19.Rxe4 fxe4 20.Bf4?! Rxf4! 21.gxf4 Bxf4 (threatening ...Bh2ch and a quick mate) 22.f3 exf3 23.Qf2 Be3! 24.Qxf3 Qg2#. The alternative, 19.g3 leads to 19...Qxg3ch and [1] 20.Kh1 Rf6, or [2] 20.Kf1 f4 or [3] 20.Qg2 Qxg2+ 21.Kxg2 Bxb1 22.Rxb1 Rae8 23.Rbe1 Kf7 with a straightforward win for Black. Either the rooks go, or Black will be left in control of the e-file.
