Sicilian is 1...c5, and only after 1.e4. Thus, it was impossible to play the Sicilian after white's opening.

I can see how the mistake arrived, though! What has transpired is the Polish Defence, a playable if rather provocative line. Boris Spassky thought it good enough to try it in the 1966 World Championship match.

If you play b7-b5 you probably should continue wihtout d7-d5. The idea is that you may want to control d5/e4 by pieces: Bb7 and Nf6. After 2.d7-d5 the diagonal b7-g2 get blocked and Bc8-b7 is a lot less strong.

Black has placed himself in a very awkward situation as well as dropping the pawn. 3...a6 or 3...c6 was just about essential. Probably Black should try unravelling the knot on the Q-side by 4...Rb8 followed by 5...a6.

It could have been a whole deal worse, starting a move back: 9.Nb5! ... -(instead of 9.b4!? this unmasked battery wins material) 9...Qa6 -(so strong is White's attack after this that Black's best is probably to give up the Queen for two minor pieces - ...Qxb5) 10.Nxd6ch Kf8 11.Nxc8 Qxc6 -(It looks as though Black will get the piece back at any rate, but White still has reserves to call up)- 12.Bb4ch Ke8 and now White can choose from two strong courses: 13.Ne6ch or 13.Qg4! This is a fine example of exploiting a weak colour complex - the dark squares in Black's position.

Instead of touching the Q-side pawns yet, White could have castled, then thought about transferring the Queen's Knight via a4 to c5.

At move 15 Black did well not to take the apparently loose pawn at b5 (15... Qxb5?? 16.Rb1, skewering the Queen against the b8-rook).

Actually if 25...Qe4, white plays 26.f3, which forks queen and rook and wins for white. The right continuation for black after 24. gxh4 would be Rxh4 and white is in a lot of trouble...

justinkropf is correct. Especially since 24. ... Rg4+ results in 25. Qxg4

Be carefull of the b pawn. White is behind in development, so black might win that pawn. But is black plays to slow that pawn could also become very dangerous. By the way another plan here would have been g6+Kg7+Rh8 to start an attack against white's king.

Actually, I might have been inclined to take the b- rather than the c-pawn, for several reasons: 1. The b-pawn is passed and the more advanced, 2. The c-pawn is backward, not passed, and in effect isolated. 3.The c-pawn has two attackers against it, so White will have to find a tempo to defend it adequately even after 25...Rxb5.

My, that is a tad optimistic. Even if you win pawn b5, it still long fight, with plenty of chances for white.

Oh, I think Black has something else in mind - quite a nice tactical shot. White could have done better - 26.Qf3, say, striking at f7.

I actually thought Black had it in mind to play 26...Rxe3, with a winning game after 27.fxe3 Qxg3ch!! 28.Kh1 Qh3ch 29.Kg1 Qxe3ch and ... Qxa7. However, White had an even more spectacular shot to save the situation: 27.Rxf7!! and if 27...Kxf7, then 28.fxe3ch. So it turns out 26...d4 was best after all. White ought to have responded with something like 27.Qb4, as 27.exd4?? was a terrible mistake that turned a slight disadvantage into a losing game. 28...b6 saves the a7-rook, but only at the cost of incurring much worse...

Someone who can spot tactical shots like this can play chess all right. Don't belittle yourself. That there's room for improvement, sure, there always is. But all of us have to start somewhere and then experience will improve our game.
