Black's 2...a6 is all the more a waste of a tempo since the White Bishop has already indicated where it wants to stand. Sure, ...b5 is prepared for, but that bishop will be more than happy on b3. Though "normal" development is to be preferred, 3.Qf3 is reasonable, given Black's 2nd move. But maybe 3.Qh5 would have been just a little trickier to meet (3...Qe7)

A threat too easily parried (like the previous move), only this time Black can parry it with a threat of his own by 4...d6.

As a motif, ...Nd4 is something White has to watch out for. Suppose Black's Q was on e7 and it was Black's move now as well. Black plays (5...Nd4 6.Qh3 Nxc2 ). But the idea is not immediately playable as the knight is needed to defend the e-pawn.

But overlooking Black's other threat - a tactical shot!

7.Qg3 might have been a better choice, eyeing e5 and g7, were it not for 7...Nh5!

'Family check' threatened.

9...Bg4 (10.h3 then either 10...Bxf3 or 10...Bh5 11.g4 Nxg4 12.hxg4 Bxg4 etc)

But being a piece down, it is usually not good policy to exchange down, especially pieces at this stage. The queens gone, White will find it much harder to conjure up counterplay henceforth. Mind you, it ain't going to be easy anyhow to unravel White's Q-wing.

12...c5 seems preferable.

An ambitious plan, but reasonable in the circumstances. An alternative plan might be 17.Be3 with a view to playing 18.b4, 19.Bd4 followed by Kd1-d2xd3. This is also a bit too "long-term-ish" but what else is there?
