This is actually an opening trap I can't recall the name but white has fallen right into it. In this instance Nxe4 is actually a mistake

Ugh really bad move, the proper follow up is actually 4...Qg5! Where whites best line is probably 5.Bxf7+ Ke8 6.0-0 Qxe5 7.Bxg8 Rxg8 8.c3 Nf6 9.d4 and although white is down a piece for two pawns there is some compensation

(The point to 4... Qg5! is that if White tries to continue "business as usual", 5. Nxf7 Qxg2 6. Rf1 Qxe4+ 7. Be2 Nf3#.)

Nxh8 wasnt needed, the rook doesnt run away. Better Nx3 first, to prevent Qxe4.

Normally its true that you have no need to take an attacked Rook like that because as Eduard says 'its not going anywhere'. However this case is an exception because if white plays a move like 6.0-0? or 6.d3? Black has the resource 6...b5! However just be aware that this position is an exception to the norm, in most cases you can wait until the took is ready to escape before you make the capture

I dont understand Nxe7. the piece is brought in for the attack, then at the first opportunity it is traded off. The only achievement is time being lost. It would have been more consistent to play 12.c4 instead.

Yep. Everything stops for check; those moves always have to be looked at.

Black could also return his queen with Qe5+ and Qe6.

You could have won it with a clever check, which simultaneously attacks his Queen: 21. Qg8+ !, Bf8; 22. Nd6+!, cxd6; 23.Qxa2 and you have won his Queen.
