Yup. In particular, both sides should be aiming at pushing the c-pawns. Knights on c3/c6 are weak in this opening as they prevent those pushes.

Generally speaking, moving a pawn just because you can is not sound. Pawns can never go home--and in the opening, you should be focused on developing your pieces.

When you're taking the time to annotate a game, try to apply a value judgement to each move, rather than just narrating what happens. For instance, here Black retreats his Bishop to a terrible location, blocking his King pawn and thereby hindering his development.

The queenside is the opposite of the kingside--that is, the side the Kings start on (e, f, g, and h files) is the kingside, and the side the Queens start on (a, b, c, and d files) is the queenside. So, if you castle towards the a-file like Black does in this game, you've castled queenside. If you castle toward the h-file, you've castled kingside.

Indeed, if you're going to bother mentioning which side, at least make sure you're paying attention to which is which. White and Black are castling on opposite sides--so it's simply not possible for both of them to be castling kingside. As haile has mentioned, Black is going queenside.

No, you played fine. If you'd waited for him to take your pawn, he would have ended up with an even stronger position than he already has: ...PxP, PxP, BxP and now he threatens to capture your Knight and then mate you with Qh2#. 9.g5 does look good, though.

Again, this was an even exchange, not a mistake. The only mistake here was Black's; he should have recaptured with the Rook, not the Knight. @jkarp: as I explained above, 9.gxh5 was the correct move. Allowing Black to take on g4 loses a pawn and threatens mate on h2. In this case, 8...h5 was a strong move, so whatever White did would be somewhat advantageous for Black, but capturing on h5 was the best choice in the situation.

...h5 is a trap in the Ruy Lopez and not much else.

Developing this Bishop was hugely important, but driving the Black Queen off the d6-h2 diagonal first would have been better: 10.Nb5 Qd7 11.Bg5.
