Professor of Computer Science, IM, and correspondence chess champ (an honorary friend of gameknot) Hans Berliner wrote a book in 1999, "The System," trying to claim 1. d4 was best by test, and in fact gave white a steadfast advantage. As with all dogmatists, like Weaver Adams, Larry Kaufman, even Steinitz and Nimzovitsch in their day (at times), this attempt to force an interpretation on the depth and breadth of chess misses the mark (particularly in regard to the art and psychology of the game) and isn't much use to most players, though he was quite the analytical genius.

I always appreciated the chutzpah of the sicilian defense in leading to a losing game for both sides.  

Sidelines are still possible at move three aside from the Open Sicilian; 3. Bb5, 3. c3, 3. Nc3, even 3. g3, 3. b3, and 3. b4, the efficacy of all these highly dependent on whether black plays 2. ...d6, 2. ...e6, 2. ...Nc6, or the whimsical 2. ...a6.

Perhaps the most heavily analyzed variation of the sicilian defense in the modern era.

I would expect black would play 13. ...h5, transposing into the Soltis variation of the Yugoslav, holding up white's king-side storm.
