1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 O-O 8. c3 d5
The Marshall attack, wherein Black sacs a pawn for a strong attack. It is surprising how much compensation Black gets for the pawn, but the variation is well known since the famous inaugural game Capablanca-Marshall in 1918.

9. exd5 Nxd5 10. Nxe5 Nxe5 11. Rxe5 c6 12. d4 Bd6
All book to here. Now White has a choice of several moves: 13 Bxd5, Re1 and Re2 being the main ones.

13. Re2
I've played against the Marshall many times, both OTB and in correspondence. The 13 Re1 lines are OK with me, but I wanted to see what my opponent had ready against the less used text.

13... Qh4 14. g3 Qh3 15. Qf1 Qh5 16. f3 Bh3 17. Qf2 Rae8 18. Nd2 f5
Here is where books leave us behind.

19. Rxe8 Rxe8 20. Bxd5+
When f5-f4 becomes a real threat is the time to make this exchange.

20... cxd5 21. Nf1 f4 22. Bxf4 Bxf4 23. gxf4 Qf5 24. Qd2 Qh5 25. Kf2
With 2 pawns up, a blunder ruins things. After 25 Re1! in case of 25...Rxe1 26 Qxe1 Black cannot reply 26...Qxf3 due to 27 Qe8 mate. And if 25...Bxf1, then 26 Rxe8 Qxe8 27 Kxf1 leaves White just two pawns up with a won endgame.

25... Bxf1 26. Kxf1 Qxf3+ 27. Qf2 Qd3+ 28. Kg1 Re2 29. Qg3 Qd2 30. Rf1 Qxb2 31. Rf2 Rxf2 32. Qxf2 Qxc3 33. Kg2 Qd3 34. Qe1 Kf7 35. Qe5
Now Black has the extra pawn, and White is looking to draw.

35... Qe4+ 36. Qxe4 dxe4 37. Kf2 Kf6 38. Ke3 Kf5 39. d5 b4 40. Kd4 a5 41. Kc5 e3 42. d6 e2 43. d7 e1=Q 44. d8=Q Qe6 45. Qxa5 Qe7+ 46. Kc4+ Kxf4 47. Qxb4 Qe2+
White has restored material equality, and now the endless checks will lead to the draw.

48. Kc5+ Kf5 49. a4 Qxh2 50. a5 h5 51. a6 Qc7+ 52. Kb5 Qd7+ 53. Kb6 Qd8+ 54. Ka7 h4 55. Qb8 Qd4+ 56. Qb6 Qd7+ 57. Qb7
