The opening here is actually the Modern Defense, Wind Gambit. Personally I've never had someone accept it, but I don't consider this a bad move. It's definitely playable.

Anything that clears the diagonal for this powerful bishop can not be that bad. The lost of tempo that black suffers as a result of this move is acceptable.

Good move! Never trust your opponent. That means that if he leaves a man 'en prise' don't assume he has a cunning plan. If you can't find the cunning plan, and it otherwise seems safe to do so, take the man, and see what happens. Mind you: neither should you assume it to be a mistake. Here you responded to White's move on its merits as you perceive them. The right way to go.

It's kind of funny really. This gambit looks like white gets nothing for the pawn, since the LSB isn't in that great of a position, and white is only ahead in development by a piece. However, white's control of the board and the center is enough to keep it even.

6. c3 is really more notable to me. There is always that lull in an attack where you have to position it better. 6. Nc3? isn't good because black can just take it with the DSB and white's position becomes stagnant. 6. c3 has that all purpose of giving the queen options Letting white's DSB move, and making black's DSB fairly weak.

I'm wondering if maybe 6...d6 would have been more circumspect, with ...e5 to follow.

I'm still not sure why you played 7. ... Be6 instead of just 7. ... e6. Also, it is to note that in 10 moves your DSB moved 5 times. If you had played 7. ... e6 you could of moved the Kingside knight and castled. Not castling against high ranked players usually ends badly.

now had you left your bishop on c8 and played ...e6 everything would more than likely be fine.

Myevilluck is a very sharp player. You always have to be on your guard against tactical shots when playing him. However, sound positional play will take the sword out of most attackers hands and make them tame as kittens

Was 11...Bd7 playable? Black is already in a bad way, by the look, but after 11...bd7 12.Bxd7ch Kxd7 13.Qxd5ch Ke8 14.Qc6ch Kf8, Black can still fight on.

Yeah, when you're playing a stronger player, or really anybody, you have to ask yourself why an hanging piece is in such a situation, and make sure it's really "free."

I do say: never trust your opponent! 14....Nf6 keeps Black going. White might have been rash enough to play 15.Qxd5? Nxd5! 16.Rxf7ch Kg8 17.Be6 Rb6! 18.exd5 Rxe6 19.dxe6 hxg6, after which Black really is back in the game. Or 15.Rxf6!? Rxb7 16.Rxf7ch Kg8 17.Be6 Rb6 18.Rxe7ch Rxe6 19.Rxe6 - a very similar line, but very slightly better for White, by the look. But probably 15.Qc6 is best.

Tempo is another good lesson. Also, if you are going to play the Modern defense, you have to play it slower and with more defense. My sole goal of this game was to make you uncomfortable, and see if you'd stick to the plan, or freak out because it was something you never saw before.

Although the Modern Defense is defensive, you have to establish some counter-play very early; or you will soon find yourself in a completely passive position. One of the secrets to surviving the Austrian Attack is to force the critical crisis early while you still know the narrow path to equality which Chernin calls the "Brenner Pass".
