1. e4	Hi everyone! Right now, in the middle of a Big Freeze, we are all getting ready for Christmas. Well, here is a little winter-warmer for you. This is now Expert Draw No. 12 and if Dave, my opponent had just 17 points more on his rating it would have been my third Master Draw. Still, I am pleased with the result as I got canned by Dave with the black pieces. So, how did all this come about? Well, read on. 1... e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 Bc5 5. Nxf7 Bxf2+ 6. Kf1	6. Kf1 - this has been my stock move of the tournament and has yielded mixed results for me.
	2 comments archduke_piccolo (2340) on 24-Dec-10: This tournament has been a bit of an eye-opener, and I thought I knew stuff about this opening. This K move has been my stock line as well, but several opponents have already shown me that 6.Kxf2 has more vitality than I had allowed myself to believe. My first reaction to the idea of this Tourney was that this 5.Nxf7 line would be a bit of an equalizer has, broadly speaking, been borne out. francisbaron08 (1200) on 24-Dec-10: the Wilkes Barre is an incredibly tricky line!


6... Qe7 7. Nxh8 d5 8. exd5 Nd4	8. ...... Nd4 - the black minor pieces start swarming in and it will not be long before they will be joined by the Wicked Witch of the West!



9. d6 Qxd6 10. Nf7	10. Nf7 - my knight makes a bid for freedom!

10... Qc5 11. Nxe5 Qxe5 12. c3	12. c3 - tries to chase away the knight but now Dave develops his lsb in order to menace Glenda on d1.

12... Bg4 13. cxd4	13. cxd4 - I get rid of that pesky knight and menace the Wicked Witch at the same time. With a 6 point deficit in material Dave is quite correct in avoiding the exchange of queens!

13... Qxd4 14. Qa4+ Kf8	14. ..... Kf8 - was expecting a move like Bd7 here but then black likes to keep the pressure on Henry.
	4 comments nuntar (1702) on 23-Dec-10: 14... Bd7?? 15. Bf7+ tommetje (1200) on 24-Dec-10: I don't see why 14...Bd7 deserves two question marks. After 15.Bf7 Kxf7, White can exchange queens (it's covered by the bishop on f2) but sacrificing a bishop to exchange queens? That doesn't sound like a great deal for White. black_cat_hamlet (1531) on 24-Dec-10: For Black, he hopes for a vicious attack on White's king early. Bf7+ is a simplification sac that leaves White two points up and much safer too! archduke_piccolo (2340) on 24-Dec-10: An I were White, I think I'd look for a better bargain. After 14...Bd7 15.Bf7ch Kxf7 16.Qxd4 Bxd4, for the exchange, Black would obtain much the more active game, the bishop pair on an open board, and a slightly more compact pawn structure. It would be hard to see White getting much more than a draw out of that! Having said that, an endgame it would be, and Black no doubt wants to keep Queens on for the sake of attack. Once the Rook hits e8, Black will have all five pieces in action, against White's two or three.


15. Bb5	15. Bb5 - Fou Leblanc moves to try and stop Re8 and offers another exchange of queens. Black could keep the Witch on the g1-a7 diagonal but Glenda can get in a nice nuisance check on the a3-f8 diagonal. Black moves his queen onto the e column threatening Qe1# but Henry decided to rid himself of black's dsb.



15... Qe5 16. Kxf2 Qf5+ 17. Ke1	17. Ke1 - If it were not for the fact that the Wicked Witch of the West can check Henry ad infinitum on the e and f files I would be looking forward to my first ever Expert Victory in a non-timed out game with an 8 point material advantage. However, Dave does have Ye Olde Perpetualle up his sleeve so I offered him a draw and he accepted. Gameknot Analysis seemed to back up my decision.
	3 comments tommetje (1200) on 24-Dec-10: After 17.Ke3, 17...Nd5+ gives drives White's King to the centre. The only move is 18.Kd4 after which I'm thinking about 18...c5+ 19.Kxc5 Rc8+ 20.Kd4 (to open up the c-file for the Black rook) or immediatly play ...Qf2+, sacrificing yet another piece but with White's King in the centre, the Queen, Bishop and Rook should be enough to seal the deal. nuntar (1702) on 24-Dec-10: It's instructive to look at what happens if White tries to escape this perpetual. 17. Kg3 is the worst option: 17... Nh5+ 18. Kh4 g5#. 17. Kg1 leads to 17... Qc5+ 18. d4 Qxc1+ 19. Kf2 Qxh1 with material equality, but I would rather have the Black pieces! 17. Ke3 looks the most interesting -- any takers? *** EDIT: Ah yes, 18... c5+. Regardless of whether White plays Kc4 or Kxc5 (there are no other legal moves) Nb6+ wins the queen and mate must follow soon. archduke_piccolo (2340) on 24-Dec-10: Quite an exciting brevity.
