Steinitz happily gobbles the queen and firmly stands three points ahead.

?? - In his frustration, Bird blunders once again!

 
12. Bb5+
! - Steinitz makes a beautiful discovered attack on Bird's knight. Now 12...Bd7 13. Bxd7 Kxd7 14. Qxd4 wins another piece for white! Even worse is 12...Nxb5?? 13. Qd8# and 12...Nc6?? 13. Bxc6 , where white can't avoid mate. At this point, Bird furiously resigns. Although this game is a poor representation of Bird's true skill, it demonstrates Steinitz's calm and collected approach that won him the title of World Chess Champion. In Henry Bird's defence, he received immortalization when 1. f4 was named the Bird's Opening, in his memory.
