And more importantly, the recapture divides and weakens his pawn structure, creating viable targets for white, particularly on f5. In the middle game, a good strategy is probing your opponent into creating weaknesses to attack; weak pawns are a common example, overworked enemy pieces (pieces tied down to the sole protection of several squares), cramping enemy pieces into voluntary pins and so forth. Seeking out outposts (protected by one of your pawns which cannot be dislodged by an energy pawn) in enemy terrain where you can advantageously post a minor piece to spread disarray is another idea. Here, black's weaknesses on the King-side will be his undoing.

Amusing annotation of an amateur game, much more colorful than most at this level. In spite of your unfamiliarity with the opening system that black played, you relied on logical development, castling, and eventually the middlegame favored you due to weak play on the part of your opponent (as so often happens in these games). Obviously, we need more retired ballplayers in chess.
