But at least as good was 23.Bd4!, with the same idea of driving the knight out of e5, but without yielding any advanced squares for the knight in White's position.

Maybe here passive defence was the better option: 23...Ng6.

Quite right: withhold exchanges until one of the rooks moves. Mind you, 28.Nxb8 Qxb8 29.h3 Nh6 30.Nxh6 gxh6 31.Qd3 was an OK sort of line.

Black has had to defend a very difficult and complicated position, pretty much from the opening. But I don't think Black was as badly placed as he seemed to think, at least, not until maybe a half-dozen moves ago. It's just that going wrong was too easy to do!

I've seen many players give up all to early in a game assuming their opponents have a solid game right to the end, but it only take one or two poor moves to turn a game around. Even the GM's give games away. It was good that sf115 stuck it out right to the end and learnt a bit more about defending a difficult position.

I think that 31. Qh3 is better and more direct. After 31...N8h6 32. Rcd1 white has a strong advantage.
