In the game annotated by
jstevens I gave as my opinion that White had good grounds for continuing here - at least for a few moves. A plausible line left Black with Rook and 2 vs Rook and none, but with the pawns split, Black would have had some technical problems to solve. Even after 50.Rxb6 Ke2 51.h7 a2! (51...Rxh7?? 52.Rb7+ Kf6 53.Rxh7 +/-) White has still the means to test Black's endgame. I was asked: would I play on in the final game position against a player rated 200+ ahead of me? My answer: Yes! At the very worst, I won't be defeated any more heavily for having played on; I might learn something about how to play these kinds of endings (attack and defence), and ... well, you never know! I might yet save the game! Bear in mind, this is because I think White still has some resources remaining. Once these are exhausted (again in my view), then I would consider resigning. Sure, Joanne felt that her resources had disappeared already. Fair enough - as was her decision to quit at this point.
