# The weakness of the a1-h8 diagonal is the most important element of this combination. Usually everything depends on such trifles. If only the black Rook had been on g8, there would have been no combination at all... And after 37.Rd7 Black has nothing else to hope for. However, Topalov still continued the fight mechanically. Black has to take the Rook on d7.

This moves gives the illusion of activity. If Black suddenly takes on h7, then after c3 he will queen the black pawn. But we did not play draughts, it was not obligatory to capture, and now the Queen could show her true strength.

And thus Black is deprived of the last hope to get a position of "the Rook against the Queen" that demands a certain accuracy from the strongest side, if playing a computer. And still, as practice has proved, a weaker side in the battle of two chess players is not able to resist, as it is nearly impossible to make a "computer move" that would take the Rook away from the King. However, it is not necessary to know all these nuances. White keeps a lot of pawns so that Black could hope to win them sometime.

Neutralizes any Black's hope connected with c-pawn.

The Queen starts attacking black pawns, and the h2-pawn is inviolable because of Qg1+. Topalov resigned and this wonderful game was over.

archduke_piccolo (2332) on 19-Oct-07: What a game! But what an annotating style, too. The whole thing reads like a story, a cliffhanger. I also like Kasparov's comments on what he actually saw and what he imagined (the "dim contours of a combination", what I used to call the "faint glimmerings of an idea"). Great! neilskye (1200) on 14-Nov-07: What an absolute genius this man is!! sirjulian13 (1200) on 29-Dec-07: Definitely interesting, the way it played out, I have just seen it for myself. I personally would not have resigned with my opponents king on the run. [anonymous viewer] sean2236 (1432) on 21-Jul-08: Wow, interesting psychology explained behind the game. Great! fedeh (1742) on 15-Feb-09: I agreed with the other comments: The psychology explained behind the game, what Garry comments on what he actually saw and what he imagined is expectacular ravi8 (1200) on 22-Aug-09: this is one of the poorest game saw in my life................if u want to see real game callenge with me.................. i gave only one star rating spongy (1200) on 28-Oct-09: so that's what a grandmaster thinks like... he sees so much. rick777 (1200) on 19-Nov-09: way too much talking......... black_cat_hamlet (1531) on 12-Jan-10: heck, I can't get enough of this game... Looked through it about 10 times already and I still find it amazing! minital (1766) on 01-May-10: ravi8 is unintelligent to say the least. excile (1200) on 24-Oct-10: topalov played an unusual opening, but i think he might be better of playing sicilian. gg. mla96 (1682) on 23-Nov-10: Wow! chessmaniopathic (1200) on 30-Dec-10: It's like being inside the "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"! supahsonic (1200) on 30-Apr-11: Awesome game. I laughed when I saw minital's comment bravid (1200) on 16-Jul-11: OMG wowzas that was brilliant game saral93 (1200) on 22-Mar-12: awesome game. Hats off annotations. Wow..... hadeer (1200) on 31-Mar-12: brilliant, awesome , wonderful , difficult game elyhim (1200) on 03-Dec-12: great annotations daviddude (1200) on 18-Jan-13: This was a great anotation. redfoxrising (2149) on 22-Mar-13: This by far are the best annotations I have ever read! edegales (1646) on 21-Jul-14: Agree - amazing to see how the brilliant chess mind works. How many people saw Kasparov's comment, on move 24, that he "sees" (can only put this in inverted commas) the rook going to d7 on move... wait for it... move 37. And it's what wins the game of course. Stunned, Overwhelmed. damalfi (1200) on 22-Aug-14: Of course, I won't argue on Kasparov's comments, that are wonderful for a high-rated chess player, but I would like someone to share more "obvious" things that maybe not any player would find so easily. The game itself is one of the ones that will be remembered in the future as we remember older master's games, like Lasker's, Morphy's, Tal's, etc. I won't say that this is another "Inmortal" game, but maybe others will. IMO, it definitely deserves it. Note: this game was commented on GK some other time - I can't dig to find where, but I've already gone through it several times (and never enough!) farhanchow (1433) on 21-Jul-15: Beautiful. The annotations are only as good as the game. The mark of a true legend. fiercequeen (1200) on 03-Sep-18: fascinating: how minor minds dare to comment on this immortal game; at least, I had the pleasure, to watch this game first hand: Wijk aan Zee, on a cold January day... gogoma (1027) on 15-May-24: Eeeee... wow .very nice |
