I have just received this pm from GM Cyrano. I hope this answers your questions. 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Be3 e5 7.Nb3 Be6 8.f3 Be7 9.Qd2 0–0 10.0-0–0 Nbd7 11.g4 b5 12.g5 Nh5 13.Nd5 Bxd5 14.exd5 f6 15.gxf6 Bxf6 16.Na5 Qe8 17.Bh3 Nf4 18.Bxf4 exf4 19.Rhe1 Ne5 20.Re4 Kh8 21.Qe2 Qg6!?
[Quite dubious. 21...Qh5 and 21...Qf7 are more usual]
22.Qg2!?
[This is not in my book. White's queen here isn't well placed. Better would have been 22.Kb1 with an unclear position]
22...Qh5
[Black wants to complicate matters. The ending after 22...Qxg2 23.Bxg2 Rac8 would be ok for him]
23.Bg4?!
[The resulting exchange is bad for white. Better would have been the patient 23.Rf1 and after 23...Rae8 24.Be6 Bd8 25.Nb3 Nc4 black has only an edge]
23...Nxg4 24.fxg4?!
[A difficult choice. 24.Qxg4!? it's interesting and after 24...Qxh2 (24...Qxg4 25.fxg4 Rae8 26.Re6!? is quite unclear) 25.Re6!? with some play for the pawn]
24...Qg5 25.Kb1 Rae8 26.h3??
[White now has problems and cracks under pressure. This is the losing move. Maybe 26.Rf1!? was the only chance to survive. Note that after 26...Rxe4? 27.Qxe4 Qe5 28.Qxe5 dxe5 - as in the game - white has 29.c4!]
26...Rxe4 27.Qxe4 Qe5 28.Qxe5
[The queen exchange is forced. White’s position collapses quickly after 28.Qb4 f3! e.g. 29.Nc6 Qe2 30.Qd2 (nice is 30.Re1 Re8! 31.Rxe2 fxe2 32.Qe1 Bh4) 30...Qxd2 31.Rxd2 Re8 32.a4 Re2]
28...dxe5
[Black's connected pawns are too strong and white's knight is misplaced.]
29.d6?
[A mistake, but white is hopeless:
a) 29.Nb3 e4 30.Nd2 Re8! (30...e3 31.Nf3 g5 also should win) ;
b) 29.Rf1 Rd8!;
c) 29.Re1 f3 30.Nb3 Bh4 31.Rf1 e4 32.Nd4 g6!;
d) 29.Kc1 e4 30.Kd2 Bg5!;
e) 29.c4 e4!]
29...e4 30.Nb3 e3 0–1

Thank you Joanne. It's interesting to see Cyrano's insights into the game. You did well, especially attracting such high powered interest. ***** I find it particularly notable that Afro said 26.h3?? was the losing move. Perhaps before that move he thought you still had drawing chances. I, myself, thought it looked bleak for you regardless at that point -- so I didn't mark you off for an inaccuracy. This game and comments just go to show that no matter how well you think you did in a particular game, there nearly always seems to be possible improvements. It's particularly true when the position is close. **** You deserve 5 stars for this one.
