White is in a very bad way in any case. But maybe allowing the Q-side to be locked up like this was a sensible idea. It won't be all that easy to break in on this front...

I would have moved the B to d3, instead. White lacks of developement. The white knight in c4 is well placed, but it does almost nothing.

White seeks a more active post for the knight. Moving the bishop to e3 would leave the knight movebound on c2, so white opts to move the horseman first. But a whole different plan was 17.Be4!? with the idea of counterattack involving moves like Qh5 and/or f4. If Black cuts across this with 17...f5, then the bishop drops back to f3, having induced a weakness that White might be able to exploit.

17...Bd6 was better.

White is obviously on a bad day.

I think you're right. White might have been better off with 21.Be5, with the idea 21...c2 22.Qg4 with at least some sort of counterattack (22...g6 23.Bxd4; or 22...Nf5 23.Qe2). After the move played, white is just about busted.

Qg4 at once would have helped a little more. After Nxb3, at least white has Ba6. Anyway, the game is lost for white.

g3 was an excellent move.

Qxd4 doesn't save the day, but it was a try. Bc5, Qf4 keeps an eye on the critical c1. Black, of course could have moved elseway.

Desperation. White is trying to transform disadvantages - as valid a notion as transforming advantages. Possibly there are better moves, but White is hoping that in the absence of Queens, Black's short-term tactical shots will dry up, and give White a fighting chance. Optimistic? Not really. White knew he was lost, and was trying to make a fight of it.

Rc1 seemed more sensible. For black, at the moment, is not possible Ba3, NxB and the pawns are stopped.

Instead of 28...Rab8!? Black could have cut to the chase with 28...Rxc4! 29.dxc4 d3 30.Rxb3 d2! White would have to drop both rooks to stop the pawns: 31.Rbb1 Ba3!
