You know... I'm not so sure about that. I agree that 29...a6 was wrong; 29...a5 was better, and 29...g5 better yet. Take a look at this line, and the position after 38.e3 in the continuation Charles has just given: b That White Knight on b8 is looking very unhappy. Probably good enough for Black is to go after the knight right away (38...Kc7) but even better seems 38...Nd8!, threatening 39...Ne6 checkmate! Black must have had the advantage here. Somewhere earlier there has to be an improvement in the post-match computer line that leaves White with an edge. The advance of the b-pawn comes to mind, possibly in preference to 33.a4?!

That need not necessarily be a bad thing; 'bad' bishops can often prove better defenders than 'good' bishops. It has to be admitted, though, that this prelate is becoming rather sedentary in its ways - none too sprightly at all, compared with the White Knights.

The wonderful thing about chess is little bits of advice such as "Don't move pieces twice in openings" always have exceptions to the rule, for instance with that rule in the Two Knight's Defence, white often moves the King's Knight for a second time, and rightly so. The number of situations where the pawns block the bishop and make it a bad bishop greatly outnumber those where the bishop is a good protector of the pawns. You do also very rarely get a position where a bishop is on the same colour square as your pawns, but it is an active piece outside the pawn chain. Neither of those situations apply here, and the bishop is poor, and generally Joanne in her does tend to have a tendency to have a bishop on the same colour square as her pawns and weaknesses on the opposite colour. Generally if you have one bishop remaining you should aim to have your pawns on the opposite colour so that there work together and don't block each other.
