This is highly interesting, and at the level of excellence of these two players I think it is possible only in "quick-chess" games. Because 12....a5 is a terrible blunder which (fortunately for Charles) the opponent does not realise! Why? Because of 13. Nb5!! For example: 13...Qb8 14. Nxd6+ Qxd6 15. Nf6+ gxf6 16. Rxd6 etc, etc

Well for instance if, instead of Ne5, I try say g6, white then has Nf6 mate, as my pawn on e7 is pinned by his queen....

But Charles, what about the simple 13...e6

Presumably this would have been the best square for white to develop his B to in the first place to avoid losing tempo.

Fortunately for Charles, his opponent did not see the alternative 14. Nb5 with a clear shift towards white! So, instead, Charles is now ahead - I think - and quite substantially!

You may be right. I used to play the dragon and got beat too many times by the Yugoslav attack, so I switched to main line Sicilian, but after some 6th moves by white (namely f4 and g3, but not Be2 which I meet with e5 or Bc4 or Bg5, where g6 is a gross blunder) I do play g6.

Wheeeev! Black castles instead of playing 18....Ng4. That castling could have lost Charles his game, because of 19. Nxe5! But his opponent did not see that.

Of course! If Bxe5 20. Qxe5 and if I take his queen, he takes mine....I am sure we would have both spotted that in normal chess.

Yes, a good move in a won situation. Rfc8 was also possible to "rub it in"

But Rfc8 would have allowed the combination that you and eddebee point out.
