Over-caution: Black's pawns are almost absolutely unassailable. Instead, 52...a2 and what can White play? 53.f5 exf5 54.Kf4 ... (Kd4 is unplayable, of course) 54...Kb1 55.Kg5 a1=Q 56.Bxa1 Kxa1, and as 57.Kf6 is adequately met by 57...f4, there is nothing further to hope for.

It is all pretty much straightforward. I was going to resign at this point but I decided to play it out until the end. White cannot penetrate the Black pawns and Black's king will be able to make it over to pick off the g and f pawns.

Black's plan from here is to force White's bishop off by playing 55...Kb1; 56...a2; 57...a1=Q; 58.Bxa1 Kxa1. Note the omission of White moves in most of that sequence: White can do nothing about it. Once the White bishop is off, Black brings his King across, making occasional waiting moves with his bishop as necessary, until he can drive the WK away from protecting the g-pawn, rip that off, then promote his own g-pawn. In the game it takes 16 moves to force the win of the g-pawn, yet any experienced player would be able to foresee the final position from here without doing any calculation at all (he probably wouldn't know it would take 16 moves even!). White lacked the means to divert or distract Black from his plan.

Move 34...Rd8?? was Black's move that should have lost to 35.Rxd7! After that the game remained evenish until the bishop and pawn ending was reached. I have my doubts that a 'draw' is a fair evaluation of that ending, even from move 37. At move 52, White would have had at best nebulous drawing chances after 52.Kf2! but at least would have been in a position to put up a strong battle to the end. Instead, after 52.g3?? (which must have been motivated by a desire to 'tidy up' the position) left white without a shred of counterplay. +++++++++++ An interesting game, however, and White must have made his more fancied opponent sweat - which probably accounts for his 'taking no chances' 52nd move (...Be8). The ending is very interesting and instructive and would be worth going over more thoroughly.
