Probably as good as anything else black has. By winning material, he places the onus on White to come up with the winning attack. A move like 13...Kd7 was always going to be hopeless after 14.Rd1ch Ke6 (not ...Ke8; Nc7#) 15.Qc4ch ... (whether or not this is objectively the best, it does the job) 15...Qxc4 16.Bxc4ch followed by 17.Rxd8 and wins easily with extra rook and extra piece.

Very nice game and annotation. I don't think I have too much to add to the excellent comments other than a general observation. Often with quick checkmates, one side doesn't seem to develop quickly enough. In this case, NONE of the black kingside pieces have moved with the exception of the King himself, so it's a bit like fighting a battle with half an army. It's so important to develop quickly and get all of the pieces into play.

From what I've read (and tried to implement here), playing white, the key to defeating the Sicilian is rapid development. This can really be seen by looking back at move 4, black is already hemmed in and white's lines are wide open. Playing as black, it would seem attacking the undefended e4 pawn immediately is fundamental to slowing white's development sufficiently to take advantage of the opening strategy.
