(?) That central pawn phalanx looks imposing, but Black's Q-side array looks the more menacing. I do think White made the wrong choice here. Black has the initiative for the moment, so White probably has to "think defence". For this reason, I don't much like 21.Rxd4 either. 21.Bxd4 seems to be indicated. By closing down the d-file, White retains plenty of flexibilty to cope with whatever threats Black can conjure up, whilst at the same time recasting his own plans. E.g. Black can not for the moment make any progress with his Q-side pawns. With, say, Qa2 and Rab1, it looks as though White can close down those pawns for a long time to come. ...f6 doesn't look to be much help to Black, neither.

I agree with ion. Bxd4 was my immediate choice otherwise the queenside pawns will roll. the centre looks good but it is too hard to generate counterplay with so many black pieces ready to defend the centre white white will have a hard time getting his bishops across.

He might have had a future d4-d5 in mind...

...and deprives 21.Bg4 of much of its point. Apart from anything else, 23.d5 is not playable now that the pin has been removed from the pawn at e6.

Maybe d5 looking for complications and sacrificing a pawn is okish. Worth a try as white is already lost anyways.

The right idea but the knight doesn't actuallly get relocated after this move it just sits there. Better I think is Qc6! and b4 Nb5!

White has serious chances after d5! exd Bb6! Black is still better after Nc7 but black must get the pawns rolling soon otherwise bad stuff...

A judgement call. 24...Rdc8 looks preferable at first sight, to give impetus to the passed pawns, but it seems to me the text move achieves almost as much in this line, whilst at the same time maintaining a restraining pressure along the d-file. By keeping a broad front in this way, Black is stretching White's defensive resources.

? Now d5 again offers chances.

But then Black plays (26.Qb2) ...b3!, when ...c3 becomes a real threat. 27.Rac1 Bb4; or 27.Rec1 Bb4 (or maybe 27...Rdc8 28.Be1 Bb4 with the idea 29.Bxb4 Rxb4 30.Qa3 (say) Rb5; or 27.Re3 Rdc8. However, White might have considered 26.Qg3 in the hope that even at this late hour something of interest might be contrived down the f- and g-files.

There's just no stopping that stampeding herd...

White's position is hopeless. If it was me, I'd resign.

28...c2! looks equally good, if not even better. If 29.Rac1 (what else?) then 29...b2 whereupon the poor Rook is roadkill.

this is not the best move for black here, since Be1 will equalize for white.

here white could play 31. Re2xb2 , Rxb2 (31.. c xb2 32. BxQ Rc1 , Bd1 ! ) 32.Rxb2, cxb2 33. BxQ.. the same continuation to whites advantage

Clever thinking, himu, and it is true that 31.Rexb2 cxb2 32.Bxa5 Rc1 33.Bd1! would have turned the tables on Black ( a real Marshall swindle!). But 31.Rexb2 Rxb2! 32.Rxb2 cxb2 33.Bxa5 Rc1ch 34.Bd1 b1=Q and, anticlimactically, Black emerges a Rook ahead. It would still have been quite a nice finale to the game, though!
