A bit of a puzzle, this. Does white want to do something with the f1-a6 diagonal? Was this played to free the e1-square for the rook? The latter motive is a good one, but I reckon I would have played Qc2 or Qe2 here, with much the same idea. The latter option, 15.Qe2, would not only have pinned the e7-bishop against the King, and threatened to win it after doubling up on the e-file by 16.Re1; but the Black king would be anchored to the bishop's defence - unable to castle for fear of 16.Qxe7. Then, after 15.Qe2, Black's range of options would have to be ...Kd8, or ...Kf8 (unpinning but keeping guard over the bishop) or ...Ng8. All of them horrible to contemplate, though relatively best would have been 15...Kd8, allowing 16...Re8.

And, the thing with 16...Re8 is that the Be7 is directly pinned since it's tied up to the King.

Understandable, and looks good, but it leaves the b-pawn unprotected. Black could have played ...Bxb4 here, with the further downside of attacking the a3-knight and covering the e1-square, preventing the White rook's reaching it. Instead, the foreshadowed 16.Re1 would have been fine.

16.Re1 is what I would've played for the reason mentioned earlier. In addition, 16...Bxb4 would've won back a pawn.

Indirectly protecting b4 against ...Nxb4, but 17...Bxb4 was still possible.

We have all been there at one time or another. The best way to learn about these knight forks is to have them happen to you. The next best - and much less painful - is to carry them out against your opponent.

Black isn't offering any kind of fight at all. 20...Nh6 would have protected the f7-square, and then White would have had to come up with a plan.
