I rather think White was just glad to have got out of the game with a whole skin! Complicated tactical games like this, whilst not exactly a crap shoot, are always likely to offer attractive ways of going wrong. Considering the winning edge Black had for most of the game, he persisted in skating close to the edge of the thin ice. A lot of fun, but risky.
