1. e4
I am annotating this game to improve my understanding of this opening.

1... d6
Black plays the Pirc Defence

2. d4
White takes the centre.

2... Nf6
attacking e4

3. Nc3
Defending e4

3... g6
Sometimes this is known as the Pirc-Modern variation as it can arise with from the Modern Defence 1. e4 g6

White develops his bishop. He is not afraid of 4. Ng4 because it can be met with Bg5, Bf4 or even Bc1, but not Qd2? https://gameknot.com/analyze-board.pl?bd=x1451338&mv=9&rnd=0.07931648696110405

4... c6
So black just develops and prepares b7-b5. 4....a6 or 5...a6 is sometimes played to prepare b7-b5 too.

5. f3
White now stops Ng4. There are similarities with the Samisch variation against the King's Indian Defence. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s_Indian_Defence,_S%C3%A4misch_Variation

5... Nbd7
Black develops

6. Qd2
Queen goes to its natural square.

6... b5
Preparing queen side activity

7. g4
This looks very aggressive to me, but it is the most commonly played move here.

And white with his.

8... h5
Black prevents further advances of the h pawn on the king side.

9. g5
So the g pawn advances instead.

9... Nfd7
The knight remains centrally played.

10. d5
The most common move.

10... Ne5
The most common reply.
