White should play Bxe5. The rook is covering black’s response. It is still a free knight.

Not a free bishop, however.

Black should take the rook.

Black hears me from the future.

Mm, exf7+ was way better. Kf8, Qe8#. So black would have to play Kd8, no intervention as the king is in double jeopardy.

exf7+ is still good, followed now by fxg8+=Q, Kc7, Qxh7, Kxb6. I’m supposed to be helping my nephew playing black, but all I see are white routes.

That was a pointless queen sacrifice.

Qxg7+. Or better, Nxd6+. Kf8, Rf1+. Black interposes a rook which the knight can take.

Uh, really—why move the king away from protecting the bishop?

Or take the bishop instead? Why can hardly lose at this point.

Can’t lose now.

Oh, blunder. Qc7+, Ka8, then Re8#. White just left black no move.
