Too late! A good idea a couple of moves ago, but now Black pretty much has to play 44...Kg5!, to obviate any checks by the enemy rook. If White plays 45.a7? then Black just marks time with his rook along his present rank, leaving the WR immobilised. But even leaving the pawn on a6 don't help White's winning chances: his K is pretty much committed to K-side defence. After 44...Rf3, Black is lost.

Actually, if black had seen Rh8 ! he could've saved his rook via 45. Kg5.

Apparently black is not familiar with the en passant rule...if a pawn on the second rank advances two squares, an adjacent pawn on the fourth rank can move diagonally in front of it to capture it, but only on the move right after the pawn advances two squares. The game can only be saved (temporarily) by playing en passant here. p.s. apologies for the shallow nature of my comments...but hopefully you've learned that things are not always as they appear in chess and before moving it is advisable to look through the position carefully.

Apart from which, White could have played 51.Rh8# after the text move. *** True, Black could have lived longer after 50...gxf3e.p. but 50.f4 was still a good move to force off the pair of pawns. Then after 51.Kxf3 can set about rounding up White's last pawn (51...g5 52.Rh8#).
