I never did...
Sorry to you all- I never introduced myself. My name is Riaan; have a look at my profile for more information about me. I love debate- I will discuss nearly anything, if you are up to controversy and a different opinion, because I am a rebel at heart.

Hello
My name is Donna. Since I prefer to not include a lot about myself on my Gameknot profile, I'll introduce and tell a little about myself. I live in the middle of the US and I currently work in healthcare as an accountant/finance person. On the side, and for my personal gain in knowledge only, I teach personal investing to anyone who will join a monthly discussion or class at the local libraries. I am joined in this adventure by a group of personal investors, none of us are professionals, who also enjoy sharing knowledge. My background is primarily in banking, leaving that 12 years ago for healthcare. I enjoy a friendly debate, discussions about numerous subjects and learning about many of this planet's differences. My thanks to Riaan for inviting me to participate.

my name is Stephen
hello all!! i like playing chess and having conversations about scientific subjects but will not engage in politics or religion. I work at the Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory. We are currently getting ready for the landing(aug 6) of the Mars Science Laboratory. It will become very stressful around august 5th because of the critical 'entry, decent, landing' sequence. Anyone that wants can watch it all happen live on several live feeds that are available from Nasa. There will be a decent camera as well as a orbiting satellite to view the landing. Photos of the surrounding area will come very swiftly as soon as the Mast is deployed.

Hi Everyone
I'm so glad to be a part of your club.

I enjoy playing chess, although I'm not good at it. I need to keep my brain exercised any way I can. I tend to get a bit "chatty" during a game....just warning you ahead of time.   I'll talk about most anything. If I don't know anything about the topic of discussion, I'll just google it and do the best I can. I don't think I'm going to join in that discussion on philosophy though.....

Thanks for info on the Mars Science Lab, Stephen. I love watching that sort of thing on live feeds. I watched the Venus Transit for hours.

It's so great to meet you all!

On the other hand
I live in South Africa, and grew up in controversial times. As a policeman I just caught the last couple of years under Apartheid- as a child I had no advantage as a white person with political power behind me. I love discussing politics- I have first hand experience about political controversy. In the field of theology, I have some radical views as well. Let's start a thread on one of those topics, if you dare!

Mr Marmalade, do you care to start?

Hippy, I'm glad you're back. I haven't done too badly in your absence during my team games. O Captain, my Captain, our fearful trip is done... I lay before you 13 victories, 1 draw and 6 lost.

Thanks for accepting my petition to join such a prestigious group. I started playing chess at Gameknot in '01 and have participated in the forums off and on since then. I live in the northwest corner of America and play chess to keep myself humble. I look forward to some positive interaction and good conversation here.

Thanks Shamash
I've considered challenging you to a game but concluded it would be unduly painful for both of us.

thumper chess
well I thought that was a well-conducted game --
and certainly an effectively-positioned endgame --
that game you won over the B33 Sicilian of dzintars
(over a defense that normally works for Horvath, Grivas, & Krasenkow).

Nice to be here
I'm Ron and I just joined this club. It may be several weeks before I will be able to say that I stink at chess. For now, I'm still mastering the names of pieces and how they move. So why do they call castles a "rook" anyway? Especially since when you swap positions with the king, they call it "castling" and not rooking. I think the bishop should be called "rook". And the knight should be called mare, steed, foal or horsie. I'm also not crazy about the term "check" but I'll leave that alone for now.

Thanks for letting me join this club. Let me know if i can bring anything to the next meeting.

Welcome Thumper and Texasron
So nice to have you both  .

Tex, I already say I stink at chess...I've said it from the beginning. As you already know, I am always distracted by the pretty castles. It must be my thing for princesses.

Welcome to you both!

a Rukh and a Book for Ron
"The Rooks look like little Castles, and they sometimes are called Castles.
But they are most often called Rooks, which comes from the Persian word "Rukh",
meaning warrior, chariot, etc."

That is from the book from which I learned chess,
"The First Book of Chess," a book which is still my favorite book,
instructive and inspiring, by Joseph Leeming.

Rook... What an interesting conversation
I've always thought that castles have towers on each corner, wherein they used to, in olden times, keep ravens for communicating between castles. The rook bird is very similar to a raven. So I kind of equated the rook as the tower where the ravens/rooks were kept.

Welcome aboard Thumper and TexasRon. Enjoy!

Thanks to smashash & lupusdwb & mistee
You all do a great job of making me feel welcome here.

Smashash: I've heard varying reports that chess's origins are based in India and/or Persia, so i guess it's not surprising that a word like "rukh" should pop up in English.

Luipusdwb: I like castle towers, especially turrets. I didn't know they used ravens for communicating. I'm learning all kinds of things on this site

Mistee: It's funny that you say you're distracted by castles. I find myself distracted by the board itself. I find myself staring at the checkerboard pattern while my pieces get picked off one by one. I will learn to focus soon.

Thanks again to all!

Welcome Aboard, PlayerG5454
It's always great to have new aliens in the club. I assume that once we run across intelligent life somewhere out in the universe, that everyone on Earth will be an alien to them. Until then, I'll just assume we're all aliens here. Live long & prosper!
