Democracy in action
I try to keep politics off this club but I am very happy that the UK government voted not to go to war, it was a very marginal vote. While I cannot find the video the ex UK Syrian ambassador explained in detail why intervention would be a terrible thing. As a humanitarian I do believe if bad chemical weapons are being used against the general populace that requires UN action however there is no mustard gas being used and if you know your history in the Iran Iraq war mustard gas was used by the Iraqies. If bad gas gets used I say yes step in but people with bad bellies is not a case for war.

Wrote a great book called blow back, this is a phrase used by the military, for every action there is a re-action, I am glad we decided not to do the action because there would be blow back.

Democracy in action
I agree that war is not good, but I do believe that a chemical was used. The evidence I saw in the media seemed solid. However, there could be several other options than war.

Did you know that the mustard gas used in WWII has been developed into what we call chemotherapy today? At least there was some good that came from it!

Progress because of war
Yes, unfortunately war is an incentive for many strides of development in technology and science. The driving force, if you want.

An alternative political system
In recent months, and specifically looking at recent past elections, political unrest and coming elections, I have been considering options for an alternative political system. I evaluated communism, socialism, democracy, capitalism, autocracy, dictatorship, fascism, nationalism, and any other political model I could study, but nowhere could I find a solution that works.

It seems to me that each and every political system eventually aims that all should be equal, but in fact the reality is that some are more equal than others. Somewhere, somehow, somebody is reaping the benefits of the system while the poor, illiterate, destitute and otherwise disadvantaged still get the short end of the stick.

Then I started considering geopolitics, and the distribution of wealth. (Maybe Chris can assist with the correct numbers here). I recently found an article that said something to the effect of 3% of the world population controlling 90% of the world wealth. Now that is significant. Look, I am working my butt off to accumulate wealth as well, and I will be damned if anybody is going to take it away from me without a fight from my side, but that amount of wealth controlled by so little people cannot be good, for any of us.

On the other hand, I look at many people who are physically fit, with enough brain power to actually work, but prefer to subsist on the social grants handed out by governments- this is happening all over the world, not just in specific countries like the USA, UK, SA or New Zealand. I have a problem with that. It is theft. These people are not economically viable, but they expect to- and take my hard earned money (in the form of taxes) without any effort or input into the local, national or international economy, and they have the audacity to complain about it and view it as a right!

Now, after once more reading the book "An inconvenient Truth", by Al Gore, (and some other books as well, by less known authors but even more eminent in scientific circles) I am also of opinion that there are just too many humans on the planet. We are plundering our spaceship Earth to the point of our own deaths. Very soon the next mass extinction will have to be acknowledged- it has already started, by our own hand- but unfortunately it will be too late for us then.

So, back to pure politics. What is the solution to the current models of democracy, vs communism? (I mention these two as the most prominent systems in our current day and age, but none of the others should be discarded- in fact, they will come into play in my argument soon.) It seems a given that democracy is not democratic: our rights, freedom of speech, freedom of movement and freedom of association are severely curtailed by rules put in place to secure those very rights. There are many examples of this. I think of a colleague, a Colonel in the South African Police Service- who dared voice an opinion on his Facebook page that was contradictory to current dogma and political ideals in South Africa, and he was dismissed for voicing his opinion. I have read about Griffiths, a nationalist politician from the UK, who is being harassed continuously for his political ideas. Political intolerance are abound even in the bastion of freedom, the USA, where, for example, there are various consciousness movements based on ethnic affiliation, but let one person from another ethnic background dare raise the same consciousness movement for another ethnic group a public outcry resounds that are heard to the ends of time.

It seems that a strong person with a moral compass that cannot be questioned is needed to make some very difficult decisions, however unpopular those decisions might be. So here is my proposed solution:

An autocrat that runs a dictatorship, based on democracy, for the social good of the community (socialism and communism), with the ruthlessness of fascism. We would have to implement drastic birth control measures, take away all rights to freedom of choice, but let people democratically elect that option, and redistribute the wealth of this planet more equitably. I'm not suggesting that we confiscate the money of the 3% ultra rich people and give that to poor people. I think it has been proven more than once that some people just cannot get ahead even with a strong push and shove from behind- they are not capable to think that far ahead and plan for the future- so a dictatorship with a strong sense of socialism will be needed to make their decisions for them and run their lives (and finances) to their benefit.

Who is up for the job?
