Not really big on these things - did previous opening ceremonies include so much self importance/self promotion as this one? The overwhelming message I got was 'Isn't London wonderful' and what a wonderful country this is........especially London.

But now that I think about it... it kinda reminded me of some acid trip in my college days.

I thought the whole James Bond / queen entrance was super cool. And wow the fireworks where amazing.

Valid point, pete...I thought it did go a bit overboard with chest-beating, especially Coe's speech.

But more important stuff...the athletes! Lochte won the 400 IM, and Phelps came fourth!

All that effort to put over the British Culture and they forget one of the defining attributes - self deprecation - is that an attempt to demonstrate our other famous attribute irony. Perhaps I missed the joke.

Not looked at the results since Cavendish missed out. Gutted.

and now Spain is out of the Olympic men's soccer. Knocked out by Japan and Saudi Arabia. Incredible! Perhaps intrepidpixie is right: the end IS nigh!

Swimming 100m freestyle, my fellow countrymen Sebastiaan Verschuren did an awesome job, he swam a new PR and almost obtained a medal, 8/100th of a second short of 3rd place.

If they lost the game they would still qualify for the knockout stages but would get easier opposition - for the chinese I think they avoided the 2nd China team. Didn't see it but apparently it was so obvious the crowd were booing because they were serving into the net and hitting long when not under pressure.

Apparently the badminton association or whoever made the decision are distraught because they get very little publicity year on year and then this happens at the showcase event. Like you say good that they are able to clamp down when it happens

Link provided to Guardian story above re badminton DQs....

But only to the feel-good stuff....

Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser retained her Olympic 100m title!

She clocked a fast 10.75 to win ahead of American favourite Carmelita Jeter (10.78), and fellow-Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown (10.81). Trinidad's Kelly-Ann Baptiste finished a creditable sixth with 10.94, making this one of the fastest women's 100ms ever....
