Engine use
My apologies because this message is being posted to two clubs on GK. One is Walking the Walk and Learning to Run. The other is Team Captains of Gameknot. It is also being posted to my own team ALCHEMY.

I have been playing chess since I was 14 years old. I am now 71. I will be 72 at the end of January. In my earlier chess career I met a friend and we played chess for a while but I became too strong for him and that bought our chess playing to and end. Well I have once again met my friend. He also place on GK and has a rating in the high 2400s. It was with great disappointment that I found out that my friends rating was due in large part to dedicatedi engine use. His true playing strength I judge to be about 1700. I will not betray my friend because I learned some valuable things from him and we have after all been friends since we were kids. I do not agree with what he does but as far as I am concerned that is his business.

He told me that he knew that engine use was very common on GK with his own opinion being that most strong players are engine users. I was shocked and protested that this wasn’t so but he offered this as evidence. He told me that in spite of his engine use most of the players he plays against are able to compete with him. He uses the current developmental version of Stockfish and the current version of Komodo running in tandem on a system that is frankly much more powerful than mine. He concludes from this that most of his opponents are using engines as well. He pointed out that Stockfish is so strong that even Magnus Carlsen has said that this engine would beat him easily. So in his opinion anybody who can compete with him is also an engine user. Do I believe this? The sad truth is that I do. I remember that in a recent world championship match GM Peter Svidler answered a question as to who would defeat an engine by saying that any good engine would defeat anyone of those present. In a tournament held in 2009 the engine Hiarcs 13 scored an unbelievable an unbelievable 9.5-0.5. This was a FIDE category eight tournament Hiarcs is not one of the best engines. It is currently rated in the lower 3000’s. Stockfish is rated in the high 3400s. To add insult to injury Hiarcs was running on a cell phone. This was the last time that a chess engine was allowed to play in a FIDE tournament. Those who are interested can go to www.hiarcs.com for a summary of this tournament as well as some games played by HIARCS.

I pointed out to my friend that engine use was not allowed on GK. His response was to laugh at me. He said that this was stated only because GK knows that some players will not play on a server that allows engine use. He also pointed out that almost all engine users are premium members. He himself is a life member. I see his point GK is a business. He stated that GK does not really care and only when the evidence is overwhelming will anything be done. I hate to admit it but what he said makes a lot of sense.
