Welcome and new member introductions...
Well, many of you know me from the regular GK forums and/or have crossed swords with me across the chess board. So welcome to all new members.Hopefully my club will become popular over the months to come.If not,it will vanish into the abyss in a year from now and never be seen again! So call it an experiment.

I have enjoyed chess for over 45 years and have trained, played and socialized with some of the best players in the country, including GM's at the Marshall and Manhattan Chess Clubs,so I know a thing or two about the game, both OTB and correspondence.I have played postal chess for years prior to all this internet stuff.I enjoy collecting all kinds of chess sets and chess computers, especially from the 1980's when chess computers were at a very popular level.

So welcome to all, please introduce yourself if you want.I will be looking for additional moderators as time goes on,so volunteer if you want,I can always use the help!I will not always be in the "abyss"since I have a 40 hour a week job as well, sometimes with strange hours!

Thanks for letting me join (now in correct thread, I hope)
Hi everyone,

I'm Al, I retired last year and quickly found that I needed to do something to try to stop my brain turning to mush. One of these things was returning to chess, where after a few false starts, I have ended up here on Gameknot. I was never a very serious chess player but I have always enjoyed the game. Before Gameknot, I played on a site which was just Blitz games. It was fun, although I was useless at it, but it has left me with some bad habits which I am trying to overcome. I still play much too fast. I have come to the conclusion that my natural chess instincts are not good, as the first move I see rarely turns out to be the best one. In many ways I am still finding my way around this site and I am hoping that joining a club will help me. I love the chess tactics, at the time of writing, my tactics rating and actual rating are pretty much the same, is this the way it should be? I also like the "analyse the board" feature, in fact, I now think that I would struggle to play a game without it. I have recently found the annotated games and I spend quite a bit of my time on Gameknot looking at these. Other folks games always seem so much more interesting than my own.

Away from chess, I enjoy most sports. These days watching rather than taking an active part. I enjoy gardening and since retirement I have joined a scheme for helping older and disabled folk with their gardens. It keeps me reasonably fit and I get to meet some very interesting characters. I have three young grandsons and I get involved with the school run as my son and daughter in law both work. One of the things about retirement is that you get far too much time to think about things and I now worry a lot more about the state of the world than I ever did before, so I would probably also enjoy getting involved in non chess discussions.

Good luck to you all.

Al.

Greetings
This sounds like just the club I'd like to join. I actually thought about reaching out to you TA when I saw your posts in another club, but I didnt want to be the "bug you" guy. I think this idea of yours is really a great one.

As for me: I've played when I was a child with my dad for a few years, and then got out of it as I grew up. It has only been in the last few years that I've re-discovered chess. My journey here on GK has been a great one, in meeting people from various parts of the world. I've made quite a few chess friends. It seems as my ranking grows, so do my questions. I've taken to youtube and watching some videos on chess openings, and its helped a lot. I (like Clippery) play way to fast. So I've tried to slow down, and take less games and focus on quality play versus speed play. I'm a father of 3 wonderful kids and a wonderful wife and self employed. Chess to me is my escape from all those responsibilities. I've recently begun teaching my kids the game and its added a new dimension to it for me.

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Hello from the Archduke Piccolo
Now, that title sprang up when typed in 'Hello', so I thought I might as well keep it. Explanation later. My thanks to TA for the invitation: it certainly sounded like the kind of 'informational socialising' I'm into these days.

My real name is Ion, I live in New Zealand (a.k.a. 'the Shaky Isles' if you are Australian), and specifically in Shakesburg Christchurch itself. We are still getting reasonable-sized tremors, nearly 2-and-a-half years after the 4 September 2010 biggy.

I learned chess at age 11 from a primer book 'Chess for Children', but it was well over a year before I had my first chess set, and I was 15 before I has a chess book of my own. That taught me all sorts of stuff I had never seen before - a real eye opener. Before that I knew nothing about the openings, knew very little about tactical motifs, but I think I did have a bit of a feel for the endgame. Guided by my chess book, which gave coverage of all aspects of the game (and which would have been a very good book indeed had the thing been competently edited!) I improved quite a bit after that.

My last year of High School I spent at Spotswood College, a school in the nearest city, some 12-odd miles from where I lived. There I met the strongest schoolboy player in Taranaki (a North island west coast province). As a result of a teams tournament, a championship and the first adult tournament I ever played in, I established myself as probably the second strongest schoolboy player in Taranaki after Even, and slightly ahead of a fine player from Hawera whose name I've fogotten. We three played in the adult tournament in Stratford over a long weekend, where I scored 3.5/7 - a very pleasing result, and ahead of Evan on 3 and the other guy on 2.5. Strangely, I played neither of them during this tournament.

However, my real lack of experience was exposed in the Wellington Provincial champs, where I crashed and burned for 3/8. I blew one winning game by a stupid misjudgement, but in the other four I was simply outplayed by much stronger opposition.

Well, we won't go further into a blow-by-blow account of a not very stellar chess career. I've played in a few tournaments, including 2 North Island Champs, and one South Island. I've never played in the New Zealand Chess Congress, where the Nation's championship is held. When I had the inclination, I lacked the money; buy the time I had the money, I had long since lost the inclination.

The fact was, something happened in the chess world in the early 1970s that seemed for ever after to taint the game. I've never been particularly clear in my mind what that was. The other thing is I discover miniatures wargaming. I have been fascinated by this hobby ever since. A visit to my profile will lead you to a link to my wargames blogspot 'Archduke Piccolo' - hence the above title.

I did play OTB for several years but I found each year that after four of five months I just didn't want to play any more. That was why my OTB rating never reached great heights, 1899 being what it was at the end of 1987. Had I been able to keep the interest up for 12 months in the year, I have no doubt at all I could have got it into 2000-2100 range at least. In my last Tournament (1986 South Island Champs) I scored 2.5/4 against 2000+ rated players, but only 0.5/2 against players at my own level. That was largely due to my butchering an easy win (fatigue) against one of them. All this after a few months play after a gap of 4 years in which I played in one Easter (1983) tournament (cold - no prep at all) and one Telegraph match (Wellington vs Auckland, 1982).

After the 1986 SI Champs I discovered I didn't even want to look at a chessboard, and I've never belonged to a club since. I did hang out for a while in the Christchurch's Cathedral square where there used to be a giant chess set. It is kind of nice when you end a game that featured a Queen sac to the applause of onlookers.

And then one day early in 2005, a friend, already a subscriber, told me about Gameknot. For a long time a 'freeloader', I am now a 'gold member' for the time being at least...

Cheers,
Ion A. Dowman

Hi,I'm Elena from Italy, thanks for accepted me in this club.I learned play chess when I was 6,but play not much time, then I let it.I played again occasionally and then begin to play here in GK about 2 years ago.I don't know many things about chess, but I like to learn, and I am fascinated by the fact that there is never a game like any other.I hope here I can learn more.

Thanks Elena for allowing me to move your initial intro post around a bit.I know there is a bit of language barrier, but somehow,I hope this club will help you improve your game.Again, you have a nice rating and certainly above what my rating was when I was playing for the first few years.

Good luck and please feel free to ask any questions that may arise in your post games.

thanks for your words, but my rating will go down quickly, because I'm going to lose many games, and also with very lower rated players than me!I have too many games in progress, and so I cannot follow well all them.I think it's better to me reduce their number!

welcome, elena
as I recall, elena brings a passion to the game that is a must,
and reminds me of the determination, concentration, and tenacity that is characteristic of, for instance, a Botvinnik:
so often players whine about how they never improve,
and they focus on openings, or on piece development and mobility, or pawn structures,
or rules of thumb for piece exchanges, or all the other unimpassioned yardsticks of a chess-student's progress:
but without passion, desire, and fire -- that dog won't hunt.

yes shamash,
Passion is what is needed to accel and unlock ones hidden abilities.I also mentioned this in another club thread. It can turn a 1700 player into a master one day.Elena,I believe, has that ability....

Hello everyone
Hi everyone.

I’m Alfred. Happy to be a member of this club. As you can read in my profile, I like to play fast games and make a lot of blunders. I was especially attracted by “the Blitz-discussion”. I tried TA’s tricks, like unconventional openings in fixed three-minutes blitz-games. No success. Lost almost every game (about 20 ). I’m spending my holiday in Australia now. When I'm back in The Netherlands, first thing I’ll do is buying a special blitz-mouse and try the off-books blitz-openings again ☺, I hope to learn and improve a little bit of my chess game. Perhaps being a member of this club will help.

Kind regards,

Alfred

Welcome to the club Alfred!

Sorry,my blitz advice did not work out for you.But blitz in and upon itself, especially 3 min blitz is not everyones cup of tea,no matter what formula is given to them!Perhaps we can analyze some of your future blitz games that you are losing if you post them pgn and we can see what going on to improve your play!My immediate advice would be for the time being....do not play blitz!Strengthen your regular corresp game first, find out or ask me some questions on perhaps some of the basics you might be missing up on and how to improve your game play.

My blitz advice is,in a sense not for novice blitz players, but seasoned ones who want to proceed to the next level. But if the foundation that a blitz player is stepping on is made of thin balsa wood, then taking the abyss receipe of better blitz secrets or buying a better mouse won't help either. But yes,a perfect mouse is more important than most understand.

Either way, welcome, and I hope the club will be able to assist you as time goes by.
Have a great vacation.
