Statistics in sport.
You hear and read a lot about the statistical side of baseball from time to time. I've even heard it described as the most statistically driven sport the planet has to show.

The authors of such assertions obvious don't know much about the manly sport of Cricket - especially Test Cricket - the 5-day game.

Here is a description of a single innings of an ongoing Test Match in India between the home country and Australia - two of the best sides in the world:

'India have taken charge of the first Test against Australia following MS Dhoni's maiden double ton which has given the home side a first-innings lead of 135.

India still have two wickets in hand at 8-515 at stumps on Sunday after resuming in Chennai on 3-182 in reply to Australia's 380.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 206 from 243 balls including 22 fours and five sixes.

Nathan Lyon - Australia's sole specialist spinner for a match on a crumbling pitch - has figures of 3-182 from 40 overs. Only seven Australia bowlers have conceded more runs in a Test innings.

Debutant tailender Bhuvenshwar Kumar contributed 16 not out in a 109-run partnership for the ninth wicket which demoralised Michael Clarke's side.

It was Dhoni's sixth hundred and first against Australia and came at a crucial time with his side struggling at 4-196.

The skipper shared a 128-run stand for the fifth wicket with Virat Kohli (107) after Australia had been in a strong position with India 4-196 when Sachin Tendulkar fell for 81.

Paceman James Pattinson claimed 4-89.

Seven India batsmen have been bowled in the innings so far, which is two shy of the world record.

Tendulkar inside-edged a ball from Lyon onto his stumps, robbing the thousands of the screaming fans in attendance of the chance to see the 39-year-old little master score his first Test hundred since January 2011.

Kohli's 199-ball century, the fourth in the 24-year-old's 15-Test career, was his second in successive matches against Australia after his 116 in Adelaide 13 months ago.

Kohli was caught at mid-on to Lyon's bowling and Ravindra Jadeja (16) was bowled by Pattinson shortly before tea.

Ravi Ashwin (three) was Lyon's third victim and debutant Moises Henriques' first wicket came when the seamer rattled the stumps of the feisty Harbhajan Singh (11) at 8-406.

Harbhajan entered into a heated debate with Australia's Matthew Wade after an lbw appeal was rejected with Harbhajan on zero.'

It is just a pity I can't show the score sheets so far for either side's fist innings. A joy to read...

Its interesting how different countries view their sports.I follow sports very little, dosen't really interest me that much.Infact, not only did I NOT know who was playing in the most recent superbowl,I didn't even watch it.But in the USA,of course, its mainly football and baseball. Then in many of the other parts of the world it is soccer.

As to who gets paid more... the best soccer players in the world, cricket or the best of the US baseball players,I do not know.

I've included a link on Alex Rodriguez from the NY Yankee's.He has an annual salary of 30 million dollars(which is 35,824,000 NZ dollars) and has signed a contract for a 10 year period giving him a whopping 275 miliion dollars (or I believe around the equivalent of 328,394,000 NZ dollars)! But that is without getting paid extra with corporate endorsements, which you can add to that figure, many millions,i'm sure.

en.wikipedia.org

Maybe the best soccer or cricket players get that amount or higher?

chess as a sport
have always liked that in the Hindustani Times of India, chess is covered in the sports section.

would like to have seen the new york post doing that with its chess columnist andy soltis.

well,it is fitting since chess was invented in India and later spread to Persia.

Professional Cricket players...
... get paid pretty well these days, but not in the same league as your pal Alex Rodriguez. But those sort of numbers are in my view ludicrous, and I daresay the people who pay them feel that way as well. But if paying professional sports people that kind of money delivers to the Corporate bottom line, that's what will happen.

Is Mr Rodriguez a pitcher or a batter? Either way, it seems odd for someone to make $25,000,000 a year for 10 years for throwing a ball, or for hitting one. Weird.

Just by the way...
... You don't often find a batting side described as 'struggling' at 4 wickets down for 196 runs. But as they were chasing 380, the odds would have been slightly against their reaching that total with just 6 wickets in hand (bearing in mind that most of the recognised batsman will have come and gone by this). Four wickets down for 96 - now that IS struggling.

By the way (just because I'm in the mood to prattle), '4 for 196' is a peculiarly Australian parlance. It means they are 4 wickets down for 196 runs scored. Every other country (including New Zealand) would describe India's position at that stage as having 196 (runs) for (the loss of) 4 (wickets). Strange indeed is the world of sports.

At the moment England is touring this country. They won the T20 series 2-1, and the one-dayers 2-1 as well. Now comes the Test series. As NZ cricket has been in a shallow but steady decline in the last 10 years, I don't expect much from our side.

Ion,
I believe its 30,000,000 a year...not 25 million and then his contact calls for the 275 million over 10 years,so he will be shorted a whole 25 million by the 10th year.Maybe he will have to collect unemployment compensation after that?Ha ha!

I think the link above says he's a 3rd Basman,so I assume he is neither a pitcher or a batter!
But again,I do not follow any sports,so what do I know?I am,however, a real and true pool(Billiard)professional hustler.Although I am not active anymore in that "profession".That was over 15 years ago,but I can still run a very large amt of balls without a miss and masse is my specialty. Here is the idea behind the masse that might just amaze you. That is not me in the video, but I am capable of doing just about everything in that video. In a real game a more "tamed"masse comes in very handy.

PS,
I'm going to try that internet TV soon,so maybe i'll tune into some cricket sports anyway just to see whats going on!
