'm confused....but i am a bear
I accepted a challenge and got this message back... message saying to decline match because your players are not allowed to play team matches at the moment. Help?
I'm confused too. I wonder what that is all about. I've never seen a message like that. Perhaps the captain sent it. Interesting. Can you post the message, Fred? I've seen messages saying that a player (players) have no more available team games. I suppose it is possible that GameKnot is investigating certain players, perhaps for rating manipulation/cheating.

Several times, I have challenged another team, and received their acceptance notification, but it contained a GameKnot-generated instruction asking me to decline the match because one of their players could not play. Strange, because typically I'd get a notice that the challenge was automatically cancelled because one of the players had become unavailable. So maybe Shirley's hypothesis is correct.

I know players go unavailable for team matches after so many games lost in under 16 moves in a short amount of time. I think the restriction lasts a few weeks. Perhaps between the time that they accepted the match and you went to accept it, a player lost that one last needed game in under 16 moves that restricted them from team games. I can only assume, as I've never come across this myself as of yet.

Yes, that is true, Joe. They are suspected of manipulating their rating in order to take advantage in team and tournament games. Usually, those players are on a team. They are, in effect, cheating. That is why their team rating in red on their profile is very useful in discovering this. All team wins and losses are listed in the information contained in the team rating table (click on it).

joveyboy Joe I think your talking about the "40 day" mini time out suspension An active players membership can come into play , making someone available/unavailable/available before a Captain gets around to accepting the match Yesterday I decided to withdraw a challenge only to find we weren't challenging the team ... when I re-checked we were playing the match ! The Captain must of accepted seconds before I hit the withdraw button shirlmygirl ... Shirley... we asked for a rule and unfortunately it can catches out anyone not just cheaters as explained in GK's rules

I'm surprised that Fred (bearz2) hasn't responded to us. He probably knows now what the message was all about.
"... your players..." playerS - That could be a team issue because it is extremely unlikely that 2 players from the same team would receive that message at the same time.
I am sure you are correct, Neil. It will catch people who become sick or forget to postpone their games. But people will timeout their team and tournament games also.

MIKE
Have you ever known an entire team to be suspended?
Two teams come to mind but they are long gone and probably were not suspended. They both had several rating manipulators. This is not the problem with team SPARTICUS if there even is a problem with that team. It is more likely that Bearz simply added the s by mistake.

Fred will have to let us know because that is a strange message. You did ask him to post the GK message so maybe he will post it. Another possibility is Fred may have unknowingly let his membership lapse for a moment.

I certainly can remember at least a couple of teams that were completely shut down by GameKnot, deservedly so. Treasure Hunters, for one. I think the captain was playing on that team under different identities. On second thoughts, the captain was playing himself in one other identity at least. "His" opponent kept on resigning in a minimum number of moves. That team was doing extremely well too, at least for a while, but the captain was a high rated player. It is possible, but I am not certain, that is where the new GameKnot rule originated. You cannot "lose" or resign more than a number of games in a certain amount of moves. Joe (joveyboy1) mentioned that rule above. Fred's team is OK. He is making matches.

We just received this message but I don't think that was what Fred posted. One or more players from the opposing team are unable to play in any new team matches at the moment — please decline the challenge.
Yes. That is the message that I am familiar with, and I am thinking that this is the message that Fred received, but that he misunderstood it.
You must be right, Shirley!
Sorry ..been busy. The message was copied and pasted to me from another team that i challenged.
If it's not a player suspension it sounds like a membership maxed out issue to me
Interestingly enough, I'm also used to that message. And, I don't think it's a max out issue from my experience of matching players. I think it's about surpassing the amount of team games they want to play. That's happened on my team where a match was setup but then cancelled. It mentions why someone became unavailable, and about 30-40% of the it's because they have more then games then allowed. But, the majority has to do with being given more matches then they want, as team settings.

I have followed this discussion with interest. I had attempted to set up matches many times for my former team, only to find that they were cancelled with explanations that seemed odd or which I could not verify. The player had been listed as available. After I suggested the match, the player quickly became unavailable. It happened so many times that I began to not be trustful of the process. The explanations began to seem like an excuse to simply refuse the match. I had gone to great pains to make it a fair match in every sense that I could think of. I began to avoid teams that always seemed to be doing this. I played teams where I could verify an interest in playing a match. I also deplore the idea that teams have arrangements with other teams that they simply say they have a grouping of preferred teams. It makes it sound like you should not bother to suggest a match , and in fact sometimes that seemed to be the case. On the other hand, if those team captains found that the teams in that grouping dealt honestly with them over time, why should they not have preferences. I am not suggesting that I have answers here. If I had answers I would have come right to the point. As you can see I haven't. Now I play on another team just as a player and I wait for suggested matches. I also play league and ladder games where some times I sense that people play against me simply because they know that it is likely that they will beat me in a game. Their rating would seem to indicate that. Actually I like those games. I used to be concerned about my rating going up. I stopped being concerned about that. I am not suggesting that manipulation of the outcome by avoiding certain games with bogus reasoning is O.K. I simply stopped trying to deal with something that I could not verify one way or another. I really liked team play and I liked suggesting matches. Now I just do the best I can on a team with little concern for the way things proceed.

Rating
I really wanted to break 1800, and I have a couple of times--just not for very long. Now 1760 doesn't seem so bad. I hope my game improves to where I'm over 1800 again, but if not I don't care too much. I was in France last year where this little kid just wailed the tar out of me. They asked him how good I was (I think--my French is very poor) and he waved his hand to indicate so-so. Well, he might have been twelve. I knew no matter how many games we played I stood no chance. They liked my set--it was one I had made. I really just wanted to play on my own set in Paris. I wonder if I should have given it to that kid. The board was not quite finished.

Whaled the Tar
I knew there was an H, but Google gave hits on wail. My bad, changing whail to wail. Closer inspection revealed the proper homonym.

I've never wanted to achieve any rating .. I just love the game .. in golf you play a great shot it makes you want to play again ... no matter what the final outcome it's the same for me in chess , If I believed in a rating then I'd choose my chess tactics high everyday !! The difference is like chalk and cheese , I love the way a game evolves.... drawing someone into a position ... I don't try that hard it's just play for FUN ! I know if I study and train I improve ... but that's not my game FedEx the set plus board to him ... who knows were it may take him !

wail { I thought it was right }
I think that you were right with " wailed the tar " . Isn't wailing on some one beating on them ? Anyway, I watched a 7 year old beat a 13 year old kid in a tournament { a really small tounrament } that I played in. I had to play the 7 year old next. I mean, I was in my late 40's at the time and I really did not want to burst his bubble. His Mom was sitting right there. It really wasn't a matter of me just wanting to encourage him by not playing hard and giving up my advantage. The kid really liked jumping around with his knights. He was pretty good , but lacked experience. I didn't take him right away. He was no Bobby Fischer if you know what I mean. I probably did him a favor. Didn't make me feel very good , but what could I do ? Give him a false sense of security ? Learning that you can lose is part of the game. His Mom did not cuss me out so I felt good about that. I think that this is one of the few games where taking a good shellacking is beneficial . It has to do something for your overall game if you pay attention. I turn 70 on the 23rd of September. I guess I am long past worrying about my rating. I will always love the game of chess no matter what. Do you suppose that there is an Alzheimer's League somewhere ?

Regarding your comments in rating : I 'm glad you kept the set. As talented as the 12 yr old is , he could try to make one himself. He probably is well on his way to making his mark in the higher ratings and maybe even Master or Grand Master. Pretty cool that you got to play him anyway. I have never been to France. If I went.........I might not let anyone know there that I play chess. I got beaten by a high school aged kid in Greece on a set where I really had to decide what the unusual looking pieces were. I can't say that I enjoyed that game, but I know for sure that he did. I did not make any deal at all about the kind of pieces { although that I am sure contributed to my loss............} but maybe he was just that good. I really can't say........but I suspect that he was.

Chess in Paris
They have a park. It is beautiful, filled with life sized marble statues of each French queen going all the way back. In one area are laid out the tables. Not far from there is a section for children. Also, French food is the best in the world. They say the Italian food is pretty good--I have not been to Italy. Before Paris my favorite cities were Instanbul, St. Petersburg Russia, Guanajuato Mexico, and Washingon DC (Smithsonian). Paris is now my number two. Istanbul is just such a magical place.

Venice
Venice, it's seeped in history. There really is no other place in the world quite like it. I know it's very touristy and crowded but wandering the calles, on a foggy evening, when it's carnevale, it's like being transported 500 years back in time.
