When I have essentially lost a game I will ask my opponent whether he would like the satisfaction of delivering checkmate or if he would prefer I resign. Then I do the opposite of what he wants.

Your opponents know this and tell you the opposite of what they want.

Reverse Psychology
I can see why Simon would disagree with this. But, I don't. It's called Reverse Psychology player A thinks that he's getting exactly what he wants from player B. However, this is exactly what Player B wants because he then does the complete opposite or, without going into details, Player B tricks Player A into going too far. And, I know quite a bit about this from what I've studied in Psychology and Sociology in College. What istiyoustand posted is an example of such.

What are the Limits of Rule #2?
Gameknot's Rules of Conduct: Rule #2:

'You may not use any sexually explicit, vulgar, obscene, rude, harmful, disturbing, threatening, abusive, defamatory, hateful, inflammatory, racially or ethnically offensive language and/or images. Please keep everything PG-13. No exceptions for abbreviated or misspelled words with clear intended meaning.'

~~~~~
Rule #2 makes it clear to basically keep things clean, but there is a part in it that makes me wonder what the limits are. I wouldn't have this question if it said, 'Keep everything PG'. Instead it says, 'Keep everything PG-13'
With that in mind, I would like to know if I made the right decision in the following situation:
Some months ago, my team hit #1 on the ladder, and a couple members happily made it known in the forum. Then one member chimed in as well, not intended to be rude I know, but I certainly took note when he said,
"---- yeah, great job team!"
I don't think I need to explain what 4 lettered word that starts with and f was used...I had never seen it in my forums before, and although there was no complaint from anyone (probably because I acted within a few minutes of the player's post), I felt it was best to delete the post. I also made it known in the forum why I had deleted it, stating basically that I did not want that player to get in trouble for leaving a post with that questionable word. I tried to be as nice as I could and made it clear that the player was not in trouble.
I haven't heard from that player since. It was difficult to contact them beforehand, but they would participate in the forum at times at least, but not since then. I feel bad for either discouraging or angering them. They're still on the team completing team matches, but even more quietly than before. I only intended the best, but I guess maybe that did not happen in this case.
The reason I post this though, they didn't use that word that starts with f in a negative way, not towards anyone, but only towards the success of the team, and it was meant to be encouraging. Now time has passed since this has happened, and I got to thinking, aren't there PG-13 movies that have occasional language, including this certain word? And they aren't exactly used as nicely in the movies are they?
With that, if you were willing to read this long post (sorry about that), did I make the right call?
I think you did.
I would have sent the member a friendly message saying that GK
prohibits that language because children might be on the site, and/or
members who are offended by that language. Just say it's not that you
mind that language or the enthusiasm, but this site has restrictions.
According to some profiles there are indeed children as young as 6 years of age playing here. Maybe Joe should also have considered the ages of the people on his team. I don't think there is a way for somebody from another team to read the posts of a team forum. I tried to share a complimentary post to the Bunnies with Eric once, and another with Shane from Lucifer's Army, but I don't think they ever could read it.
So if it is an in-house post, and there are nobody younger than 13 on the team that can read it, maybe another option was to contact the particular team member in person and explain the situation clearly, asking to remove and edit the specific post.
But after all is said and done, I think Joe did the right thing. As captain he has a huge responsibility to keep the club running smoothly and cleanly, according to the rules.
On a site like this, it's best t err on the side of caution. They
might have software filters that pick up certain words, and it
might take a while for them to catch it. I don't think GK has a
big staff of people running the place.
The word is coming into much more common usage today. I hear
it on some YouTube channels and TV shows. It's not a bad thing
per se, but in some places it is inappropriate.
PG-13
From Google:
You can say “f**k” in a PG-13 movie (once), as long as it's in a non-sexual context: “F*** you,” but not “Let's f***.” But like the ratings process itself, most of those rules remain shrouded in secrecy. (The formal guidelines, which allow “a single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words” are here.)
Since I did not open the thing I don't have the link. But that is PG-13. Does not sound like an actual GK rule violation, but as moderator you are both free and encouraged to limit excessive profanity in your forum. Even once is excessive in context.
What I would recommend in the future is reposting with the expletive deleted.
Words
I am surprised by some of the words GK automatically censors.
Also by some it doesn't.
Thank you all for the replies. In my experience, my parents don't approve of language like that, and I do certainly agree. They raised me well. Even if I didn't make the right move, I would rather not see that word or any other that I know can offend others in my team forums. I of course have nothing against the player because of that, they did mean well. Hopefully they know that's how I feel, but if not, hopefully I can make it known. They're still on the team at least, so that's a good sign
classica, if the issue arises with the same person again, or with another person, I'd like to keep in mind what you said, I like that, thanks
Also, that is interesting, but at the same time, I would be a bit surprised if Gameknot did have some sort of software filter to pick up certain words. I say that because they don't monitor private messages. Granted, team and club forums are different. I don't know if there's any proof of that, it would be interesting.
riaannieman, yeah only team members can view their own team's posts. As for the ages, not everyone reveals them, though I do doubt there would be any under 13, but of course I don't know that for sure. Gameknot does say you have to be at least 13 to have an account, but I have seen plenty younger than that. I do like what you said too though, perhaps I can have them edit and repost in the future.
amacivn, Gameknot's headquarters are based here in California aren't they, if I remember right? The rules could be based primarily for the U.S. Of course Gameknot is meant for everyone no matter where they are in the world, but I wouldn't be surprised if the rules are based more on U.S. terms than the rest of the world. This of course I doubt could be proven in any way, I'm just guessing, I have no real idea
Also I do play Scrabble often with my aunt...but I don't think that'll be an issue between me and her lol
lord_shiva, I did always wonder how the movies rated PG-13, now I know. Doesn't surprise me though that there's plenty of secrecy. I don't think I'll ever try to find out what Gameknot does and does not censor...but I'll try to keep those points in mind as well.
Thanks again everyone, hopefully I didn't give you all too much to read, I don't know how I do that every time
