Sympathies
Hi Fred, my deepest sympathies to you, your team and to the family. Sad stuff indeed, when I came across this post it made me remember one of my member I lost in 2019 . Long story short I always wondered why the sudden timeout in his games and then one day I decided to message him and ask why so. Turns out he was very ill and tried his best even on his bed to play games. When I heard this, I immediately told him to take a break from chess and get well, that was my main concern, I didn’t care about the games, anyone’s health comes first. I just wanted him to get better. We may never know what someone is going through until we hear it from them. I didn’t mind if he wanted to resign the games but he preferred to use the vacation flag at his disposal. I believe he took 11 days if memory serves me correctly.

I just waited for a message to know he’s okay and out of the hospital and turns out he never made it 😪. It was very disheartening, 2 months had elapsed and not a sign.

R.I.P mate!

I'm so sorry that this happened Joe. While I haven't lost a team member, I know what you're alluding. I was, for example, sad when we lost Ken. But, I was even sadder when jstevens1 passed away so young. With that, I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm also sorry to hear this Fred. Even if we never meet in person we still have feelings for players.

On our team page, Kings of the Castle, we have two memorials and they were very sad cases.
One has the chess diagram on our team page and the other created 3 long team forum threads
on chess tactics and strategy. Also, my avatar was his and a wear it proudly.
So much more I could say.

I know of at least three others on our team that have passed and one was a personal friend.
He was a chess coach/advisor for Cleveland (OH) Public Schools for 25 years. The other two
were also great people. I think of all of them often.

These are just players I know of, there very well could be more.

Sorry to hear of the passing of your co-captain, I did not have the pleasure to play a game and chat with him but after reading the article it is easy to see he was well liked and loved, sounds like he was quite a guy!! Sure reminds us of the fragileness of life and as they say we are just passing through. A tough reminder that we all should try and be a bit more compassionate and decent toward one another as one never knows when our time is up, May He Rest in Peace!

I, too, am sad to hear of his passing. I played one match with him and lost both games. He was a very cunning player.

This reminds me of when our team lost Larry (peterliberty) about 5 years ago. Larry had worked hard in his last 2 years of his life to train me to be the team's captain.

Our former captain, Dave (courtreporter) had, rather suddenly, turned the team over to Larry due to his cancer treatments shortly after I joined our team, and then left gameknot, never to return. Larry worked furvently to train me to be the captain, then turned the captaincy over to me, stayed on as my advisor until he passed away later that same year (2015).

I actually met Larry twice in person. Once for lunch in Eau Claire, WI and once at his home in northeastern Wisconsin the day he died. My wife and I only stayed for around 30 minutes and talked mainly with his wife and daughter. Larry acknowledged that he recognized me, but could not speak due to his disease. Within an hour after we left his house, Larry passed away. I was driving at the time I learned about it, and had to pull our car over and wept. He was truly a great mentor to me.

I remember how you and your wife visited Larry, Tim, when he was very ill. I certainly remember him being captain of your team. I think that jedechel was captain of another team, but I cannot remember which team. I have lost some of my members also, one, I believe to the Corona virus. He lives/lived in Brazil which had a great many deaths. He timed out his games. He had never timed out before. The others I do not know what happened to them. I wish I did. They are all still on my team as I am hoping they will suddenly reappear, but I fear they are all dead.
