Club Status
All,

Would anyone like to take over this club? Dues are paid through September. I simply don’t have time to manage it the way it deserves to be managed, I barely have enough time to make my chess moves as it is. I’m planning on leaving the site come 2021 but hope to maintain a membership to keep my profile history alive and to hopefully return when I’m less busy.

I’m not sure if gameknot will allow it but if anyone is willing I’ll certainly try to pass it on

I don't think GK will allow, and I was going to close the club down. But, if this happens, maybe I could just merge it with my club. This way, instead of being a teaching thing when I assumed it worked on way, I'd change the name to Team Captains of Gameknot Continued. On the other hand, I just don't know how I'd do that, JJ.

JJ, you will be missed when you are gone.

There is a new club similar to this one started by Mike orkneylad:

True, so I'll probably just close my down as planned. But, if something is to happen to that club, I would open a different club and just call it Team Captains of Gameknot Continued. I ran a club for several years called Chess Coaches and Mentors since I thought the game worked one way. When she got involved, the only thing I disagreed with is that running the club was a waist until this year. But, I, in general, am not going to pay another due, unless it's the only club that's about team captains. Time will tell.

If this happened, I'd call Team Captains Continued.

I would be willing to take it over, but...
The way that Gameknot runs their clubs, they do not allow the transfer of ownership from one person to another. I would need to create a new club and have everyone join the new one.

I would do my best to keep the club running in a similar manner to the way I run my team. That is, the co-captains do most of the matchmaking, and I step in only when necessary. I would support the moderators the way I support my co-captains and would trust their judgment on the day-to-day things. I would want to have a conversation with anyone before they become a moderator to make sure that I can trust their judgment, which I think is reasonable.

Let me know what your thoughts are about this.

~Tim

One more thought...
I am a life member of Gameknot and have no plans to leave. This is where I play chess, period.

I wish I could start up a captains club, just on the thought that because of how young I am and how much I like Gameknot, I'd be around for decades to come, at least that's my plan. That doesn't mean things would go according to plan, but still.

Would it be possible to pay JJ the money needed to pay the fee, like with PayPal or something like that? It's only $20 right? I don't know, just a thought. It would be nice if a club founder could be replaced like team captains can be. I guess we have until September to figure it out.

I will enquirer whether or not gameknot will allow this, thanks.

Joe, it isn’t about the membership fee... I would have no issue letting the moderators handle the club and paying the fee annually whether I’m here or not. I feel the club needs the owner to be around and unfortunately with my career and my classes I just don’t have the time anymore.

Otherwise I guess the questions boils down to what can the club owner accomplish that moderators cannot? I don’t exactly know the answer to this question. I suppose in absence of the ability to transfer club ownership we could elect or select a defacto leader in my absence.

I'm glad you explained it this way, JJ, and I'm on the same page as hamot2. Hopefully, they'll allow it, but if they don't, I'll keep my club opened. And, I'll change the name since it's up for renewal in mid April. So, what would happen is that I'd delete all of the threads and remove most the members except for the ones that are captains/co-captains or have been one. And, then when it's all settled, it would reopen in late April to continue what this club started as a backup plan.

And, that's explained in this thread with my club. gameknot.com

But, that was an option if all else fails. Having said that, I really like JJ's idea, as well, of a leader. One way or another, there is an alternative, in some shape or form. I just posted above as another option since I'm also flexible here.

Another idea in if all else failed would still be to close my club down so we have what's there. But then, open a new club in early September for the same reason. On the other hand, I'm hoping that GK would allow someone to take over as I view that as the best case scenario.
timjensen

GK won't do it
I have tried to assume ownership with another club leader, and Gameknot refused to do it. Basically, the current club would have to go inactive and a new club would need to begin.

Which also means that it won't be enough for a mod to just take over because, even if they did, the club would be inactive by late September. So, depending on when JJ would no longer have time, I'd consider the idea of just closing my club and opening a new one in early September. But, it's looking more likely that I'd just change it from a teaching to a team thing. That would mean that when it's up for renewal by April 14th, I'd suspend between 10-14 days for reconstruction while all threads are deleted. Then I would just change the whole thing.

Well we can all talk about the situation so i have now opened a new club as i said i would...

This could be a perfect opportunity for a slow transition on the discussions that we have in this club and also the moderators will not change.

So your all welcome to reset the club when ever your ready.

Thanx

I see it, and I'm glad that a new one's opened, Fred. Thus, I'm going back to my original plan and closing my club down when it's up for renewal.

I'll join soon. Additionally, I'll also add that if anything happens there, I'll open a different club either then or when the time's up for this club which ever comes later. This way, there'll always be a continuation. And, there are, currently, several members in my club who are and/or were team captains or co-captains, and I'll write the names on a piece of paper.

I'll help where I can, though I plan to be active in this club too as long as it is still open.

I assume everyone will join once this club goes inactive, which isn't until September if I remember right?
