Flip Flop
Trump was compelled to "eat his words", that he said he would stop the Chinese from
profiting from the US businesses.
He now is forced to submit to the Chinese because of the need for co-operation
in the North Korean situation.

The old saying comes into mind.

Be sure your brain is engaged, before your mouth goes into action.

In retrospect, it did help him convince all those gullible people during his campaign.

Putin cannot be bullied by Trump.
At the UN, using veto power Russia blocked the investigation of Assad whether he might have used the illegal chemical weapons. Thus he protected Assad. Trump will learn the lessons from Putin if he continues to annihilate Assad.

I think it's clear the UN has failed since the end of the Cold War. In Rwanda, yugoslavia, the Arab spring and now Syria the UN was useless. Western democracies and Nato have done what was needed. Yet western style democracies alliances are fracturing as Asian populations with autocratic histories and cultures are growing and become more assertive. More unilateral acts will be necessary.

The UN
The US is fearful of the UN, and regards it as a tool of Satan to establish a one world government ushering in the rule of the Antichrist.

Idiots running amok in our halls of congress devoutly believe this ignorant stupidity, and act upon it to soothe the irrational fears of their ignorant and superstitious constituents.

I think including "Yugoslavia" here is a serious mistake!

UN...
... is a post WW2 creation, a bit more cohercitive and efficient than the Nations Society created after WW1. We learn slowly but we learn. At least, the nations exchange all together. It didn't work that bad, for UN does not only act for peace, but also for development, for children rights, education and for health. There is still a lot to do and it goes very slowly because of the many countries involved !
UN is now 70 years old.
The winners of WW2 are still the members of the security counsel and have this veto right. They are the 5 main arm dealers in the World ! Experts in security indeed !
UN, in its actual form is obsolete but without it, the situation would be even worse !

Now UN is nothing but an organisation and is what the nations want to do from it. If you think that the congress of your country doesn't work, it's not the fault of the congress itself but of its members.
US blame UN inefficiency because of the Russian veto in Syria, US blamed France for the use of the veto against intervention in Irak but what about the situation of the Palestinians for which US systematically use their veto right ?

The nations have a common responsability in the fact that UN doesn't work : if we only see things from our window without trying to understand the others' point of view, it can't work.

Let's hope we won't need WW3 to create a more efficient system !

Why Cannot
We fix what is wrong with the UN, instead of abolishing it and ushering in WWIII?

I completely agree with shiva. There is nothing wrong with UN (except for a very heavy bureaucracy) - only with some of its key member states!

ace-of-aces; 09-Apr-17, 21:26: "...since Trump became president, there were radical Islamic attacks in England, St Petersburg subway station Russia, in Sweden and in Egypt..." and "... We should wait until ISIS is gone..."

I must point out that many attacks by radical Muslim elements have targeted those countries before Trump became president. The radical Muslims target the regimes, and just address the leaders of those regimes as and when they change. Also, if we wait until ISIS is gone, it is not going to happen. ISIS is a cancer that needs to be cut out from the moderate and reasonable Muslim majority who in fact opposes Jihad and Fatha.

softaire; 10-Apr-17, 12:22: "...Well, who then is gonna do it? The U.N.... Finland?..." I would love to remove have my esteemed and honorable and totally honest [sic] president removed by someone, also the president of Zimbabwe, but the fact of the matter is that such removal depends on the people of the country, not outside intervention. If the people are being cheated out of such removal, there is always the International Court in the Hague, and only then can one allow outside intervention if such a court case has been won by the aggrieved people. (President Zuma faces 788 different criminal charges!)

No evidence that Assad used Sarin gas on his own people

This post is misleading! General Mattis said that they (i.e. USA) does not posess such evidence. Yet, the aid groups have taken samples and the evidence for use of sarin in unquestionable!

I think everyone agrees that Sarin gas was used.

We just don't know who used it.

There aren't that many possibilities - not many with acess to bombing airplanes, and bombing areas with people opposing Assad.

All of the information about Middle East are biased, under control of a state or a party, or a faction.

I recently asked questions to a friend of mine, highly educated in "political sciences", specialised in Middle East, who has been living in Egypt for some years about a story I imagined. He told me : "you can tell whatever you want, nobody knows for sure what happens, who is allied with who and the rare people who know won't tell it." "Nobody knows who has the real power in Egypt (even the Egyptians themselves)".

Motivation
Assad HAD gas munitions. Who most likely used this weapon?

The Americans? The Russians? Syrian rebels on their own people using captured weapons in an effort to make Assad look bad? The Chinese? Assad?

Too bad Garry didn't win
his other run at a presidency... for the FIDE

Current guy Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, accused of financially supporting Assad...
"But in November 2015, the US Treasury Department placed him on a sanctions list for "materially assisting and acting for or on behalf of the Government of Syria".

The list also includes a middleman accused of facilitating Syrian government oil purchases from the Islamic State group."

Just a quick update- since my previous post, both Robert Mugabe from Zimbabwe and Jacob Zuma from South Africa has been removed. The news about Zuma broke this morning! South Africa is going to get a new president within hours from now.

The replacement for Mugabe apparently has a very cloudy past, but one can hope he has improved his murderous ways since the 1980's. I have been told first hand by my neighbor that Emmerson Mnangagwa, the new president of Zimbabwe, orchestrated genocide on a large scale in Zimbabwe many years ago. That is why she fled to South Africa, and won't return to Zimbabwe- all her family has been murdered, their property dispossessed and there is nothing to return to.
