Nothing major. Some kids didn't understand division by fractions or...thinking back it was always math-related.

@saint: Teaching to the lowest common denominator? That's frustrating.

@Kneilca: What do you guys in your schools about this? I know that here in Calif, that is a problem.

@John Clark: There is a good resource for students and it's free. The Khan Academy offers helpful lessons in math, etc. Some excellent video clips are also available on YouTube. I've used Khan's tools for a couple of my students. You may have heard of it: www.khanacademy.org

By the way, Happy Birthday, JC!!!!!!

@JC
In Manitoba, we believe in success for all learners. We have lots of educational assistants in classrooms to help teachers work with the weakest students as well as those whose first language is not English (or in some cases, French). This provides some unburdening of the teacher's load for the most challenged students, but there is always that group of average-ish students and the very bright, who seem to get less attention.

Peer tutoring programs are very popular in most schools. Students who are successful in a subject, tutor fellow students at lunch, before or after school, with teacher supervision. It's a win-win. Competent students deepen their understanding by explaining and guiding their peers and weaker students get the extra help they need. There is an axiom in teaching: "You never really understand something till you've taught it to someone else." I'd have to say that as a teacher, this has been very true for me personally and I have seen it in action in my students. Knowing how to get the answer is one thing, but having to explain HOW you got it so that almost anyone can understand it, too, is quite another.

White Power Marches
The KKK has marches from time to time. They are every bit as appalling as you might imagine. Yup. We need poor oppressed white men to contine marching for white supremacy the way we need more ovens for Jews and other undesirables.

My favorite quote on the KKK: It is a landfill that accepts only poor white trash.

Feminism
"I would love to eliminate all racism and sexism. I just don't think that introducing racism and sexism against white people and men is a good way to do that."

I should wait until SS is able to respond before commenting on his posts, but I did not place him in his present position.

So feminism has nothing to do with equality and everything to do with female oppression of men.

I never met any like that. I am a feminist. Why shouldn't women be allowed to take auto shop or have their sports funded at the same level as the boys.

Universal Design
As a follow up to some older comments on this thread, one of the newer trends in modern education is to analyse curricula with a view to eliminating unnecessary barriers. This Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is inspired by the UD movement applied to architecture and infrastructure design. (Think ramps, curb cutaways at intersections, family washrooms, etc.) Not only does UDL benefit the students who struggle, but it makes learning easier and more fun for all. www.cast.org

What's your opinion of educational metrics?

About Trump
People that are loyal to Trump do not want to acknowledge his faults.

But the way it is now, even a lot of republicans that hold very important places in
that administration are questioning his sanity, and judgement.

The last thing I read, was that he knew nothing about the budget and the only thing
he was planning to is spend taxpayers money on the fence.

Also, he is trying to crucify Sessions, because he did not participate in an investigation.

The reason Sessions did not, was to protect Trump, just like he would not answer any
questions about what he and Trump talked about, while he was under oath, because
he knew that if he would say what he and Trump talked about, it would be damaging
to Trump.
Now Trump wants him fired, something he can do himself, but he will not do that
because he knows he will get in trouble with the rest of those republicans who say
that Sessions is a "good" person.

He wants someone else to fire him, because he is still with the mindset of being the
one who dictates, and gets others to follow his wishes, without involving him in some
way.

@Lord Shiva
Sorry, I live in Canada, so I am not completely sure what "educational metrics" are. Could you give me a brief explanation or send me a link? I am guessing that you may be referring to standardized testing?
