Yes 14. e5 was played
Yes 14. e5 was played. It earned 3 points. I also selected this move! Black replied14...Ne4

What did white play now?

Charles, the position is not right, the white knight is not in f1, but in g3

OK thanks

I would play 15. Be3 here in order to complete development.

15. Nxe4 dxe4 16. Rxe4 is also an option and wins a pawn in the short-term but I don't think that white would have a particularly big advantage.

At first sight...
... it seems we could win a pawn, here:

15.Nxe4 dxe4
16.Rxe4 ...

But after -

16...Bd5
17.Rook moves away from e4, Bxf3
18.Recaptures on f3 Qxd4
... recovers the pawn.

So, instead of 15.Nxe4, I suggest we prepare that move by...

15.Be3.

elenapetrova
20-Oct-20, 15:44

Difficult choice
White apparently could gain a pawn with 15.Nxe4 dxe4 16. Rxe4 but after 16...Bd5! Black seems to have a good compensation and active play. In this line I analyzed also the tempting exchange sacrifice with 17.Qe2!? but I was not happy as White.
So I think it's time to find a better place for the white squares bishop
15.Bd3 it's my move
charleshiggie
22-Oct-20, 10:15

White did take the knight
15. Nxe4 (3 points)
Danny King gives two points each to 15. Bd3 and 15. Nh4. he doesn't consider any other move.
black did retake
15.............dxe4
What did white play now?

16.Rxe4
It is too easy this time, or it is not the right move?
elenapetrova
22-Oct-20, 14:20

16.Rxe4 is forced
charleshiggie
23-Oct-20, 10:22

Yes of course
Yes the ladies are quite right, 16. Rxe4 was played (1 point). Nothing for anything else.
Black replied 16....c5

What did white play now?

17. Bd3 looks most logical to me, developing one of the final pieces and defending the pawn.

Otherwise, what else? Possibly 17.b3 but that can't be as good.
archduke_piccolo
24-Oct-20, 12:58

17.Bd3...
... Looks safe enough. The d-pawn will be protected indirectly (17.B-Q3 PxP 18.NxP BxN 19.RxB QxR?? 20.B-R7ch).

The rook on e4 rather puts paid to the notion of 17.Be3, I think.

I'll go with 17.Bd3, mainly because, apart from 17.a4, I can't think of anything else.
elenapetrova
25-Oct-20, 05:36

a) 17. b3!? would be interesting, with the idea 17...cxd4 18.Ba3! but black looks ok after 18...Nd5! (and if 19.Bxf8 Nc3!) with a rather messy position
b) The weird 17.Nh4 !? looks playable, but after 17...Qd5 18.Bd3 Rfc8 Black's position looks solid
c) 17.Be3 !? would be interesting. I tried to improve White's play in the line 17...Qd5 18.Bd3 Bf5 19.Rh4 cxd4 20.Bxh6 Bxd3 21.Qxd3 Ng6! but looks drawish
In all the lines the White Square Bishop looks misplaced, so 17.Bd3!? is my choice
charleshiggie
27-Oct-20, 02:29

You all score 5 points!
Yes 17. Bd3 was played. 5 Points. Nothing for anything else. Black replied 17......Bf5
What was white's 18th move? Two moves score here, one gets 1 point, one gets 3 points.
archduke_piccolo
27-Oct-20, 03:07

H'mmm...
I'm going to fly a kite, here, and suggest

18.Qe2

with the idea 18...Bxe4 19.Qxe4 with attack against h7.
elenapetrova
28-Oct-20, 04:44

18.Qe2 is winning for White after 18...Bxe4?? 19.Qxe4 and White has a strong attack but after 18.Qe2 Qd5! 19.Rh4 Bxd3 20.Qxd3 Ng6 I can't see an advantage for White
So my choice is 18.Rf4 maintaining the rook on the 4th rank, more aggressive than the simple 18.Re1
charleshiggie
28-Oct-20, 13:39

Elena is right
Elena is right, 18. Rf4 was played, 3 points. Nothing for 18. Qe2 for the reasons Elena says. 1 point for 18. Re1.
Black replied Bxd3. What was white's 19th move?
5imon
28-Oct-20, 13:54

18...Bxd3
puts us here I think

19. Qxd3 looks like the obvious move.

penelope80
28-Oct-20, 14:26

Yes,I don't think there is another move...Qxd3 looks forced
charleshiggie
28-Oct-20, 15:34

Normally
Normally I would give 24 hours for people to make up their minds, but in this case there is no alternative to the obvious recapture. White played 19. Qxd3(one point, nothing else considered), black replied cxd4, What did white play next?
charleshiggie
29-Oct-20, 12:32

I am going to leave it a bit longer before saying...
I am going to leave it a bit longer before saying, as no one has posted any suggestions
archduke_piccolo
29-Oct-20, 12:46

Two moves that occur...
... to me.

(a)
20.Rg4 ...
A fairly transparent threat, but perhaps heralding a K-side attack.

(b)
20.b3
possibly preparing to develop the Queen's Bishop at b2 or a3.

I suspect the latter is objectively the best, but I'd probably prefer 20.Rg4
elenapetrova
29-Oct-20, 13:37

A developing move like Bd2 would be logical,
But probably the rook on f4 could be more aggressive (and better placed) on g4
After 20.Rg4 White threatens 21.Bxh6 and the Bc1 could hope to be better placed than d2
So 20.Rg4 is my move
5imon
29-Oct-20, 14:19

I agree. One of 20. Rg4, 20. b3 or 20. Bd2 seems most sensible.

There doesn't seem a lot in it. I'd probably play 20. Bd2 in a game.
charleshiggie
30-Oct-20, 05:46

20. Rg4 was played
Elena is right again! Rg4 scores 3 points. Nothing for anything else.
Black replied 20...Qd7 - now what?
archduke_piccolo
30-Oct-20, 13:53

Position after 20...Qd7.

Defend the rook:
21.h3.
elenapetrova
30-Oct-20, 14:32

Agree. The g4 Rook is under attack and must be defended, so 21.h3 is my move
charleshiggie
31-Oct-20, 15:40

Yes
Yes Elena is right again! Well done! 21. h3 was played (3 points). Nothing for anything else. Black replied Qe6. What now?
elenapetrova
02-Nov-20, 02:27

Now it's time to move the c1 bishop
Bf4 seems a natural move
