Basically we start with an early midgame position and then play through the game. You, the readers, have to guess the moves of the winning side. Moves earn marks according to how good they are. I post a new move every couple of days or so.....

Bxe6 fxe6 11. d4 is an obvious way to play and looks good but there are hidden dangers for white: 11.....exd4 12. cxd4 Bb6 13. Ng3 Ng4 - incredibly direct - 14. h3 Nxf2 15. Kxf2 Qh4 16 Be3 d5 and it is hard to break free from the pins successfully. Not a forced line but plausible. 10.Bxe6 fxe6 11.Be3 Bxe3 12.Nxe3 d5 13.h3 a4 14.Qe2 a3 15.b4 d4 (Yifan Hou vs Arkadij Naiditsch, 2018) is more prudent but hard for white to prove any advantage. If is any consolation, the move I chose at this point scored nothing.

charleshiggie 15-Oct-20, 10:17	Qb3 Qb3 looks a reasonable move to me - but no, it doesn't score anything, not mentioned by Dany King - I guess black just exchanges bishops. However exchanging bishops and then playing Qb3 seems good to me, forking pawns on e6 and b7 - but Danny King doesn't mention that either

I offered 4 candidate moves: 10.Ne3 10.Ng3 10.Be3 10.a4 The last of these is out of left field a bit, but its purpose is to constrain Black's Q-side, after 10...Bxc4 11.dxc4. I'm not sure I'd really play it though. 10.Be3 looks promising at first sight, but seems to lose a pawn. On the whole I'd be inclined towards 10.Ne3, with the idea of recapturing (if called for) with the knight. Further, the knight seems to have more of a future on e3 than on g3. Finally, as there is no useful square for the bishop past d2, it doesn't matter so much that it's blocked in.
5imon 16-Oct-20, 03:24	I was also leaning to moving the knight on f1. It doesn't feel as though it's completed it's journey yet. But I don't see that either 10. Ne3 or 10. Ng3 are likely to so great as to get praise from Daniel King, so I'm thinking there must be something else!

Be3 and 10. a4 are not mentioned by Danny Danny awards one point to 10. Ng3, commenting "10. Ng3 continues the normal knight's journey, but after 10.....Bxc4, 11. dxc4 Qd7 Black is ultra-solid" Apart from 10. Be6 ad 10. Ng3, no other moves score, apart from the move played, which Danny gives 3 points to. 5imon is right, there is something else.... would everyone like a 2nd guess?

5imon 16-Oct-20, 06:28	It feels as though white wants to play d4. Perhaps this could be achieved by playing 10.Bb5 in order to remove the knight on c6 and get a good grip on the centre.

archduke_piccolo 18-Oct-20, 14:25	I agree: ... with 14.e5. Admittedly, ...c5 might be a concern, but Be3 might be a sufficient reply yo 14...Ne7. I don't think there is anything for Black after 14.e5 Ne4. I did consider allowing an exchange of pawns on e4. True, that leaves us with the 'isolani' on d4. But what do White's K-side attacking prospects look like? So I offer - 14.Be3 or Bf4 as possible alternatives.
