![]() “The groundwork for modern humanism was laid during the Enlightenment by those philosophers who sought to purge religion of most of its superstitious elements and replace them with a deistic or atheistic rationalism. Thomas Paine's Age of Reason (1794–1796), which argues for a religion based on a belief that the world was created by a rational God, was one of the most important such works in this period. In the nineteenth century, two major influences were important. First, at an institutional level, the Unitarian Church came into existence and by century's end had developed a commitment to toleration and a disavowal of any type of creedalism. One of the most significant intellectual transformations of the nineteenth century was the widespread acceptance of a developmental view of the past. This revolution in thought had a profound effect on modern religious history. Although many people found ways to reconcile biological evolution and traditional religion, naturalistic evolution gave ammunition to critics of Christianity who branded it as intellectually stagnant and naïve. More important, however, developmentalism also made it possible to see human history as in flux; indeed when applied to religious history, it had the effect of relativizing religion. Humanism drew on both aspects of evolutionary thinking. Humanism as a distinct intellectual movement arose in early-twentieth-century America among self-described religious humanists. It arose first among radical theologians, especially Unitarian clergymen, who saw religious humanism as anything but an irreligious movement; although these men entirely rejected the "God language" of their colleagues, they felt it essential to retain the institution of religion. Religion was a historical construction, they believed, which developed and changed over time to accommodate new social forms, and it would have to remake itself dramatically in order to continue to exist in the modern world. Already many Protestant modernist theologians were arguing that traditional religion was outdated, based as it was on views of God as a king or lord over creation, and that religion must change and embrace a democratic ethos. The humanists went further, rejecting all discussion of God as unjustified in a scientific age. And yet, they argued, religion itself was not defunct; it fulfilled certain social and psychological urges of human beings. The challenge for moderns was to find ways to integrate current scientific knowledge and democratic social values with the institutions of religion. This is largely what early religious humanism was designed to do.” www.encyclopedia.com Other research has substantiated this social dynamnic changes as well. www.ross.mayfirst.org Five Causes in Decline in Belief MODERN PHILOSOPHY After the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation, men were much freer to explore new ideas. Some began to question everything and believe in nothing. The British philosopher David Hume (1711–1776) argued that no one can prove anything, even the law of cause and effect. The German philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) insisted that we can only know how we perceive something and that we really cannot be certain about things like the existence of God. These men were agnostics, and their skepticism has influenced our culture. Their main idea was that we can’t be sure about anything (of course, they thought they were certain about that). This view has saturated our educational system, especially at the university level, and it has crippled religion in America by convincing people that no one can be sure that his belief is right. DEISM Deism is the belief in the one true God but not in the Bible and especially the miracles of the Bible. It is often described as the view that God’s relationship to the world is like winding up a clock and letting it run down without interfering. Deists believe in God. They believe that God created the world, but they don’t believe God has ever intervened miraculously in the world. They reject the inspiration of the Bible, the deity of Jesus Christ, and all the stories of God’s intervention, from the flood to the miracles of the New Testament. They believe in some basic moral guidelines, but they usually abhor “organized religion.” Thomas Paine summed up deism when he said, “I believe in one God, no more.” Thomas Jefferson showed how prevalent deism was in his time when he produced his own New Testament (usually called the Jefferson Bible) in which he literally cut out all verses in the gospel accounts that mention miracles. The French deist Voltaire (1694–1778) was also famous. “HIGHER” CRITICISM The Jewish philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677) attacked the Bible and said it was not divinely inspired. As skepticism spread in Europe, liberal theologians, especially in Germany, questioned who actually wrote the books of the Bible. Under the guise of “scholarship” they concluded that these Scriptures were not written by the men previously thought to have penned them or at the time many supposed. They claimed that the Bible has been revised and edited by numerous unknown writers. Julius Wellhausen (1844–1918) championed the view that the first five books of the Bible were not written by Moses but were produced much later from at least four sources. F. C. Baur (1792–1860) said that many books in the New Testament were written after the apostles died. Later Rudolph Bultmann (1884–1976) said that a modern reader must remove all the “myths” of the New Testament to discover what the actual message is. EVOLUTION About five hundred years before Christ, Anaximander set forth a theory of evolution in rough form. The idea never took hold until Charles Darwin wrote Origin of Species in 1859. When Darwin wrote this book, he believed in God. At that point, his theory would be better described as theistic evolution. Toward the end of his life, Darwin was more of a skeptic than a believer. Though not well received by churches of his day, the theory of evolution has since gained widespread acceptance in education. It has also made inroads into many Catholic and Protestant churches. Since even theistic evolution denies the creation account in Genesis, a person cannot consistently believe in the Bible and in this view. ![]() “The Moral Premise and the Decline of the American Heritage” Man in his very nature has need of a major premise — a philosophical starting point or Prime Mover, as it were, to give reason for his being, direction and order to his thinking, and initiative and impetus to his actions. With the Christian, this basic assumption stems from the belief that God, by Divine fiat, created man as a moral, rational being with freedom of choice, and that exercise of will and choice in both the moral and physical frames of reference is an awesome but unavoidable fact of existence. Man’s choice to partake of the "forbidden fruit" provided him with the promised knowledge of good and evil, but along with it came an incalculable complication of his circumstances. Nature became a challenge to his physical existence. Other people constituted to him a confused complex of variant relationships that ranged from love on one hand to virulent hatred on the other. God faded from his consciousness, and with that loss went also the meaning of man’s struggle. Man was thus lost in the only sense in which he could be really lost, and the need was therefore critical for a major premise which promulgates for man a supreme purpose for life, a purpose which justifies the physical hardship, the social conflicts, the spiritual struggle, and the disappointments with which life is filled. Only such a premise delivers life from the insanity it sometimes appears to be — struggle without hope, achievement without happiness, victory without exaltation, death without resurrection. Man, himself, throughout the concourse of his history has given ample evidence of his longing and need for an all-embracing purpose. He knows so little that is perfect, yet he always looks for perfection — a seminal response which derives from the moral image in which he was originally created and the perfection of the environment in which he found himself. Though corrupt by his own choice, he still yearns for the ideal, like some earthling wandering in a cosmic wasteland dreaming of the green hills of earth. Basically, he seeks a society which will fulfill his demands on nature, ameliorate his relationship with his fellow man, and provide the ultimate reason for existence. The British Empire was built on common law derived from the principles of the Torah, and the United States was founded by God-fearing men of faith who, despite their personal failings, possessed a great reverence for the Scriptures. Like a “city on a hill,” our English-speaking nations once shone as a moral beacon of hope in a dark world. But today, we are fast becoming a “byword” throughout the world (see Deuteronomy 28:37). As this chapter will demonstrate, the Anglo-American peoples have forsaken their moral foundation—a foundation once based squarely on the Scriptures. Thus, curses—prophesied long ago as corrective punishment on a rebellious Israel—have begun to multiply and will soon overtake our nations. As God warns in Leviticus 26:25, He will indeed “avenge the quarrel of His covenant,” bringing sore punishment on modern Israel for her persistent violation of His laws—in particular, the Ten Commandments. In order to understand God’s present judgment on America and Britain, we must first realize the stark contrast between how our forefathers viewed God and the Bible as compared to how today’s leaders view God and the Bible. As you will see, the difference is astonishing. British Reliance on Scripture Whether Catholic or Protestant, Britain has been nominally Christian for well over a thousand years. An early figure in the nation’s religious history was Alfred the Great (849–899 AD), who, as king, was able to secure victory over the Viking invasion of 871 AD that threatened to destroy Christianity just as it was beginning to flourish as the majority religion. Inspired by his success, Alfred created a new system of Christian education designed to reach the illiterate country people. It was the king’s hope that Christianity would begin to capture the imagination of the ordinary people. Known for his reverence for Scripture, Alfred “adopted the Ten Commandments and other selections from the Pentateuch, together with the Golden Rule … as the foundation of the early laws of England.”1 Later, the Norman Conquest of England (1066 AD) cemented the power of the Church of England. Throughout the Middle Ages, Christianity in Britain became central to the lives of ordinary people. In 16th-century England, Catholicism—which had dominated the nation’s religious landscape for centuries—was beginning to face serious criticism from the common people as the Reformation gained momentum. Protestantism, however, was a minority faith, and no one seriously thought about England dropping Catholicism. But as fate would have it, King Henry VIII wanted a divorce so he could remarry and secure a male heir—but the Pope denied him permission. The king reacted by “divorcing” England from the Roman Catholic Church. Of course, Henry endorsed a few religious reforms so his decision did not appear to be driven by self-interest. Eventually, after a brief but bloody return to Catholicism under Henry’s daughter, Mary I, England became predominantly Protestant. For the first time in Britain’s history, to be English was to be Protestant. Despite later turmoil caused by Catholic royalty, the 1689 Act of Toleration granted freedom of religious worship. The Church of England, though always the official state religion, had surrendered the idea of imposing a single faith on its people. (For more on the religious history of Britain, see Appendix 6.) As the British Empire was rapidly expanding under Queen Victoria, people began to sense an awareness of God’s role in British history—and many began to sense a divine mission behind the Empire. For example, Lord Archibald Rosebery, British prime minister from 1894 to 1895, once spoke at Glasgow University about the British Empire. He said that even “the most cynical must see the finger of the divine” in the Empire’s formation, which, he added, resulted from the “supreme direction of the Almighty.”2 At times, other leaders have referred to the “manifest destiny” of the British—of their “right” and “duty” before God to serve mankind through the rule of the Empire.3 Such sentiments served to solidify religious devotion and a reliance on the Bible in the lives of many British citizens. One of these was Sir William Blackstone. Introduced in 1765, Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England were fundamental to the development of English common law and served as the premier legal reference for the nation. Of utmost importance was the fact that Blackstone’s work was based principally on the laws and precepts of the Bible. The Commentaries were crucial as well in the subsequent development of America’s legal system.4 Following British example, many early American colonies incorporated the entire text of the Ten Commandments into their legal code. Other passages of the Old Testament were copied in whole or in part into various legal documents.5 But today, modern psychology, new philosophies, and naturalistic worldviews—which have proliferated in Great Britain for more than a century—are taking center stage, leaving Christianity in serious decline. Now a breeding ground of Darwinian evolution and atheism, England has been falling away from its Christian heritage for generations. Moreover, as Appendix 8 brings out, Christianity may be facing virtual extinction in the United Kingdom. America’s Biblical Roots Today, it is considered “politically incorrect” to teach America’s Christian roots. While most Americans (about 85 percent) still identify themselves as Christians, America itself is now widely viewed as a post- Christian nation. As will be demonstrated, this apparent paradox is the result of a long process of cultural and ideological change—including a new, liberal approach to the idea of the “separation of church and state.” What does it mean to be post-Christian? Essentially, it means that Christianity—or, more to the point, the Bible—no longer impacts American politics or culture as it once did. While almost all politicians are sworn into office with their hand conspicuously placed on the Holy Bible, they ignore it as the ultimate source of moral law. In the interests of political correctness, tolerance and moral relativism—which, as we will later see, all stem from multicultural ideology—Christian morals cannot be held as superior to any other religious view or set of principles, including those of secular atheism. Why is there a battle going on in America regarding “homosexuality” and its acceptance. Going back to the premise that America was founded as a Christian nation, made up mostly of Christian people, that would necessarily have to mean that as Christians we would view homosexual behavior in light of what the Bible has to say about it. But even before we go there let's us do a study on homosexual behavior in general, shall we? It is shocking to realize that LGBT youth represent up to 40% of all young people experiencing homelessness. They are also at an increased risk of physical or sexual abuse, STDs, and mental health issues [2-5]. We aim to highlight the factors leading to poorer health outcomes, social inequalities, and health care disparities in LGBT youth as compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Review Depression and suicidal risk among discriminated LGBT youth Sexual minority adolescents report a greater incidence of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and increased suicidal behaviors than heterosexual adolescents [6]. In a school-based survey conducted in Boston, Massachusetts (n = 1320), 10% of participants identified themselves as LGBT and 58% of them were females. The respondents’ age ranged between 13 to 19 years in this survey. LGBT youth scored significantly higher on the scale for depressive symptomatology. They were also more likely than heterosexual and non-transgendered youth to report suicidal ideations (30% vs. 6%, p < 0.0001) and self-harm behaviors (21% vs. 6%, p < 0.0001) [7]. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health revealed that sexual minority youth are prone to be isolated and disconnected from the social networks [8]. This estrangement can increase the risk of depressive symptoms among sexual minority males [8]. Similar trends were replicated in other community surveys [9]. Bisexual males and females were also more likely to express depressive symptomology than the heterosexual individuals [10]. Sexual provocativeness and increased substance use LGBT youth are more likely to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors leading to an increased incidence of STDs. The rates of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV are twice as higher in sexually minority youth, as in heterosexual men [11]. According to the Dane County Youth Assessment Surveys (2008-2009), multiple factors accounted for unsafe sexual behaviors in LGBT youth including earlier age of sexual encounter, increased number of known and anonymous sexual partners, lack of education on safe sex practices, ineffective use of condoms, and testing and perception of STDs acquisition [12]. ![]() Some churches run homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and food banks. The better of these expect nothing in return for the services offered. We have other Christians who view the poor as potential profit centers, and refuse aid to those in need if they cannot pay. Some Christians scorn immigrants and those of other faiths, calling them "infidels." Some Christians are the first to cast stones against porn stars, Playboy Bunnies, and those who have been sexually assaulted by men in power when they speak up. I have only praise for the former, and like the Bible prophets, condemnation for the latter. "Depart from me ye workers of iniquity, for I never knew ye." I applaud those who abide by moral values. Men like Barrack Obama, who never cheated on his wife, never bilked college students out of their hard earned savings, never defrauded investors or refused to pay vendors for services rendered, never extolled the virtues of torture or proclaimed we should murder the families of war prisoners... I think you know the honest, good, upright, moral Christian people of faith I'm talking about here. |

![]() But that’s exactly what they did, and in the first lines of the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof …” Known forever after as the Establishment Clause, this pronouncement — and the entire amendment — has over time proven to be a versatile tool that does more than separate church and state. It protects America’s faithful and faithless alike, providing both freedom of religion and freedom from it, as appropriate. To be sure, the Founding Fathers couldn’t foresee how their efforts would one day help to make America the most religiously diverse nation in the world, nor anticipate how the Establishment Clause would come into play on future issues, from the teaching of evolutionary theory in schools, to the displaying of the Ten Commandments in public buildings, to the constitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance. For more than 200 years, the balance between religious liberty and the rule of law has been constantly renegotiated. To understand how that balance has been maintained both then and now, we need to look back at the influences that shaped the Founders and the documents they created to serve their country and — ultimately — us. The traditional idea of the Founding Fathers as conventionally pious Christian gentlemen is a myth, of course. But neither were they actively hostile to religion. John Adams, to pick one, remained a regular churchgoer throughout his long life. Jefferson, meanwhile, was skeptical of religion, yet revered Jesus as a great moral philosopher, even assembling a personal edition of the New Testament with scissors and a glue-pot, retaining the ethical teachings of Christ while editing out the miracles. Sound familiar? The Declaration of Independence, then, served not just as the founding document of the American Revolution, but as a balance of the influences of the Founders and the average citizen. It asserted our unalienable rights, endowed by our Creator. But this truth was not handed down in a mystical vision; rather it was self-evident, revealed by rational observation. The declaration makes no further mention of God. The Founders strove to emphasize that separation from England was an expression of human rights, rather than Divine Right. “The Founders believed that religion could be a healthy force in society — if it were exercised within a zone of personal autonomy,” says Kowalski. There were practical reasons, too. Many are losing sight of the Judeo-Christian ethic, with its moral absolutes, upon which our nation was founded. Strengthen our resolve to hold the line, to be true to you and to not be led astray. Lord, I ask you to open up the old paths that have become overgrown by ungodly philosophies. Reveal the good way to our people so that they might walk therein and find rest for their souls.
