Bleaching Wood
The oak I turn for my chess sets isn't quite as white as I'd like for the white pieces. I'm curious about bleaching it. Has anyone had success with wood bleaching? I don't want it pure white, I still want to see the grain--I just want it toned down a bit, and I reckon I'll have to sand down the pieces afterwards again.

Also, how about polishing wood? Is there a way to mount the piece back onto the lathe after you've sawed it off the dowel, so that it can be polished there? I know they mount bowls on just one side.
