Right at the 55 second mark she makes a small error and smiles to herself as she picks it back up and carries on.

Each individual riff is impressive, but the full six minutes seems like an impossible feat.

The Song of my Heart
This song was composed by Jean Sibelius to lyrics by the Finnish poet Aleksis Kivi. It is usually (and best in my opinion) performed by a male choir. You will find the orginal lyrics below the youtube window (click 'show more'), followed by the English translation. 'Tuonela' is the Hades (the underworld) in the Finnish Kalevala mythology. The song is about the death of a young child, and Sibelius composed the song when his youngest daughter Kirsti died of typhoid fever at an age of 2 years.

This can't reach the aching heights of a choir. But it's music.

Lyrics:

I will go through this life
And never know who I am or why I'm here
Or what I'm doing, or what I'm doing
But that's okay, its what we do
Everyday, everywhere, all around the world
Uh-huh

I know my name
Take the word of everything I've ever learned
Like my father and my father's father
It's the way we've always done it
And the way we always will
Uh-huh
Making it up, making it all up
I mean, what else can we do?
Making it up, making it all up
That's the only way to get through
Cause life is hard, but life's alright
Cause I'm here with you tonight
Mmhmm, yeah yeah

And Jesus gonna welcome me into heaven
When I get there
The day that I die
I can say for sure that I'll be able
As well as I am able to look him in the eye
And say "hey, well I did what I could with what I was given"
But surely it isn't much, it's just made to do this living and I lived it up
And I've been forgiving myself ever since

Making it up, making it all up
I mean, what else can we do?
Just making it up, making it all up
Now I know this shit ain't cool
Cause life is hard, but life's alright
Cause I'm here with you tonight
And that's alright, that's alright

And there's more to life, more than what you see
But if it's true that life's a dream, I wanna keep dreaming
Dreaming here with you
I'm alright, I'm alright
And maybe so are you
Yeah I'm alright, I'm alright
And maybe so are you
Maybe so are you
Maybe so are you
Maybe so are you
Maybe so are you
Maybe so are you
Maybe so are you
Maybe so are you
Maybe so are you
Maybe

I heard this song for the first time in probably a decade today when I was flipping through radio stations in my car trying to find the Vikings’ game.

Great tune with great lyrics and maybe the only hit by the musicians who wrote and played it. If they had another hit, I’m not aware of it. I never even heard of the songwriter and group that performed this song before today.

“It Never Rains in Southern California”

By Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood

youtu.be

Lyrics:

Got on board a westbound 747
Didn't think before deciding what to do
Oh, that talk of opportunities, TV breaks and movies
Rang true, sure rang true

Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours

Out of work, I'm out of my head
Out of self respect, I'm out of bread
I'm underloved, I'm underfed
I wanna go home

It never rains in California
But girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours

Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it?
Had offers but don't know which one to take
Please don't tell 'em how you found me
Don't tell 'em how you found me
Gimme a break, give me a break

Seems it never rains in southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But girl, don't they warn ya?
It pours, man, it pours

Yeah, I think it came out in 1972 and reached #5 on the U.S. Billboard charts.

Great tune.

Funny how I heard it just by chance today.

One thing I appreciate about grocery stores and supermarkets is they usually broadcast from a radio station that plays great tunes from the 1970s to 1990s. You don’t hear much music from before or after then, at least not in the places I go.

That’s a great tune; thanks for posting it.

Haven’t heard that instrument often. The closest I can think of is the clarinet, and this is a good tune from the Tatum Group Masterpieces featuring Art Tatum on piano, Buddy De Franco on clarinet, Red Callender on bass and Bill Douglass on drums.

“You’re Mine You”

youtu.be

I like Tatum’s accompaniment on this tune and think it was De Franco who said playing with Tatum was like chasing a train.

In an interview, De Franco said he was once so mesmerized by watching Tatum’s hands during one of Tatum’s solos that he forgot to start playing again when the solo was over. De Franco also said in that interview (I’ll try to find it and post it; it was a great documentary) that musicians like Tatum and Charlie Parker were a total unit - whatever they thought flowed through their fingers instantaneously.

“Beyond the Blue Horizon”

I first heard this song when watching “Rain Man,” a great movie from the ‘80s starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, but can’t find the clip where it was played.

But this is (imo) a good video of it.

Great documentary on Art Tatum, regarded by many musicians as the greatest pianist who ever lived. Tatum died in 1956.

Buddy De Franco, a clarinetist who played with Tatum, explains beginning at 18:50 why the general public didn’t like Tatum’s playing.

The documentary itself is 28:31.

Have You Met Miss Jones?

There are two versions of this song on the Tatum Group Masterpieces album featuring Art Tatum on piano, Ben Webster on tenor sax, Red Callender on bass and Bill Douglass on drums.

I like this version a little better because of Art’s introduction, which is about 1:53.

Great tune, beautifully played

BTW, the second commenter under the video picked a strange song to complain about “showoff technique tendencies, and unrelated flourishes.” I don’t think this song has any of that - just the opposite.

And he mixes up Ray Charles and Fats Waller.
victoriasas
04-Feb-23, 15:44

I stand corrected.

Both Fats Waller *and* Ray Charles considered Tatum to be a god.

<<His first goal was to stand equal with Nat "King" Cole. "The reason I emulated him, he was more into what I wanted to do than Art Tatum. Now Art was God on the piano as far as I was concerned. But Nat sang and accompanied himself," recalls Charles.>>

www.washingtonpost.com

I obviously wouldn’t go that far, but I think Art Tatum had a tremendous God-given talent which he worked hard to develop to its full potential.

Very pretty tune and Oscar Peterson’s solo from 2:08 to 3:49 is amazing.

Being the shameless name-dropper that I am, I'll give a shout-out to my cousin Jim who was a member of the Joe Pass Trio and has played bass with a large number of other music celebrities. Most of my uncles, aunts, and father were musicians (Grandpa was the school music teacher).

Please, now listen to this. Grappelli , Marc Fossett and Niels-Henning Oersted Pedersen

esecially to Oersted-Pedersen's solo starting at about 3:15! He is one of my absolute favourite jazz musicians. He handles the bass as if it were a guitar!

That’s impressive as heck. Your cousin sounds like a very accomplished bassist to play with Joe Pass. I was never really into guitar players, but Joe Pass was my brother’s favorite guitarist, followed by Barney Kessel. I don’t think Joe Pass ever played with Art Tatum (probably too many years separated them,) but I know Barney Kessel did.

I remember one of my brother’s prized recordings was from Joe Pass, Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis playing “It’s the Talk of the Town” on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He recorded it onto a VHS tape back in the late 70s or early 80s. But my sister was mad at him one day and recorded over it.

Thanks for sharing that info on your very accomplished cousin!

That was very nice. Thanks for sharing that. I also liked the uptempo “Them There Eyes” that followed “You are the Sunshine of My Life.” Those are two tunes I don’t really know, though, so it was hard for me to follow the melody.

Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen was obviously a virtuoso on his instrument. The only other bass players I was familiar with growing up were Ray Brown (who played with Oscar Peterson) and Red Callender (who played with Art Tatum.)

Oscar Peterson wrote an article about NHØP in Jazz Times after hearing of his death:

This is a good uptempo tune from the same album as “That’s All.”

Hey all…
I tried to find that clip of the “Great Guitars” playing “It’s the Talk of the Town” on the Tonight Show back in the late ‘70s or early 80s but couldn’t.

However, I did find a clip of them playing “It’s the Talk of the Town” at a different venue - and it sounds nearly as good as I remember the Tonight Show performance. And this clip I found was posted to YouTube only two weeks ago.

But I got one of the players wrong - the “Great Guitars” was comprised of Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd (not Joe Pass.)

“It’s the Talk of the Town” is a great tune and easy to like on a first listen. The main melody starts at 0:12 after a short intro by Barney Kessel.

In this clip, the guitarists are, from left to right, Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel.

Enjoy!
