3I/ATLAS
3I/ATLAS is an interstellar comet discovered on July 1, 2025, by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Río Hurtado, Chile. It is the third confirmed interstellar object passing through the Solar System, following 1I/ʻOumuamua and 2I/Borisov, which is why it has the prefix "3I." The comet has a hyperbolic trajectory, moving very fast relative to the Sun (about 58 km/s), indicating it originated outside the Solar System and is just passing through.

3I/ATLAS is an active comet with a solid icy nucleus surrounded by a coma—a cloud of gas and icy dust that escapes as the comet nears the Sun. Its nucleus size is uncertain but estimated to be less than 1 km across by early measurements, although newer observations from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory suggest the nucleus could be roughly 7 miles (about 11 km) wide, making it the largest interstellar object discovered so far.

The comet will not come closer than about 1.8 astronomical units (AU) from Earth, so it poses no threat. It is currently traveling through the inner Solar System and will continue to develop a dust coma and tail as it approaches the Sun. Its origin is traced to interstellar space near the constellation Sagittarius, suggesting it was traveling through the galaxy before entering our Solar System. 3I/ATLAS is a fast-moving, active interstellar comet, notable for being the third interstellar visitor detected in our Solar System and potentially the largest known interstellar comet observed so far.

Oh yeah, you are absolutely correct. If it changes course then it is under intelligent control if no external forces acted against it.

Two possible phenomena: we are entering a region
of the galaxy with more interstellar medium, dust, asteroids,
comets, boulders, and 31Atlas is just the beginning; and/or
3IAtlas will interact with the sun electromagnetically causing
flares and CME's [pointed away from earth].

You make a great point. If we are entering a more dense interstellar medium. That could explain the regularity of mass extinction events.

Here is an answer By AI to a question I just asked, sparked by your good post.

Mass extinction events appear to follow a somewhat regular pattern, with evidence suggesting a cycle of about 26 to 27 million years. Studies indicate that widespread extinctions of land and marine species often align with significant asteroid impacts and volcanic eruptions, which may be triggered by the solar system's movement through the galaxy. Roughly every 26 to 27 million years, the solar system passes through a dense region of the Milky Way, increasing the likelihood of comet showers and catastrophic impacts on Earth. These impacts can cause global disasters leading to mass extinctions.

While some research supports this periodicity, with mass extinctions occurring approximately every 26 to 30 million years, other studies caution that the data may not be fully conclusive or that some patterns could be spurious. Nevertheless, a notable theory explains this cycle as linked to astronomical factors, such as the solar system’s galactic orbit influencing the timing of catastrophic events causing extinctions.

In summary, mass extinction events do seem to have a rough regular pattern on the order of about 26 to 27 million years, linked to astronomical cycles that influence the occurrence of comet showers and large-scale volcanic activity on Earth
