Good tune!

Back In My Arms Again (1965)

The Supremes

youtu.be

<<"Back in My Arms Again" was the last of five Supremes songs in a row to go number one (the others are "Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", and "Stop! In the Name of Love"). The song's middle eight is almost identical to a later Holland-Dozier-Holland hit, The Isley Brothers "This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)".>>

Another #1 hit by the Supremes

This Time I Know It’s for Real (1989)

Donna Summer (performing on the David Letterman show)

youtu.be

This song sounds like a Motown hit from the ‘60s but apparently was written in 1989

Catchy tune and great lyrics!

<<The song became Summer's biggest hit in the United Kingdom since 1979, reaching number three and spending a total of 14 weeks in the UK Singles Chart top 75. It reached number seven in both the United States and Canada, becoming Summer's 14th and final top-10 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 as well as the last top-40 hit of her career. The song was also successful on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary chart, peaking at number two.>>

Turn Your Love Around (1981)

George Benson

youtu.be

I thought this track was from George Benson’s well-known “Give Me the Night” album, which featured a lot of great songs, but I checked and it wasn’t. Not sure where I heard this song as I’m pretty sure “Give Me the Night” was the only George Benson album I owned.

Posting this in memory of Stalhandske. He was a fan of Bill Evans (jazz pianist.)

I never really listened to Bill Evans, but this was a recording of his I liked on a first listen - very melancholy and laid back…

Spring Is Here

Bill Evans Trio

After I heard this, for a long while I confused it with “Some Other Spring,” which Art Tatum (also a jazz pianist) did an incredible rendition of. Not only do both songs have “Spring” in the title, but they have that same kind of melancholy vibe.

Pussycat was a Dutch music group of three sisters Toni, Betty and Marianne Veldpaus, who had their greatest successes in the 1970s.

Already in their early youth, encouraged by their stepfather, they performed at carnivals, parties and talent contests as "De Zingende Zusjes" (the singing sisters). Later they called themselves "The BG's from Holland", where the BG was supposed to stand for "Beat Girls" but was also a reference to the then very popular "Bee Gees". They covered some of the band's songs, but also other pieces of Motown music.

The three sisters' long-time mentor and songwriter was Werner Theunissen. He helped them get a record deal in the early 1970s, at that time still under the name "Sweet Reaction". He also penned their biggest hits, including "Mississippi". This was released in April 1975 after a change to the biggest Dutch music label, EMI/Bovema, and a new renaming of the band to "Pussycat".

Spotlight was a music programmed for young people broadcast by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) between 1968 and 1978. It was the equivalent of Beat Club or Musikladen in Germany.

Rock Your Baby (1974)

George McCrae

youtu.be

<<"Rock Your Baby" was one of the landmark recordings of early disco music. A massive international hit, the song reached number one on the Hot 100 in the United States, spending two weeks there in July 1974; number one on the R&B chart; and number one on the UK Singles Chart, spending three weeks at the top in July 1974.

Having sold 11 million copies, it is one of fewer than 40 all-time singles to have sold 10 million physical copies worldwide.>>

Just found out tonight this song was published only a few years before this recording was made (a lot of jazz standards date to the 1930s and ‘40s.) This recording was made in September 1956.

Interesting comments on this recording from September 1956…

“I know that some think that Art Tatum can’t be questioned, but I think a great admirer of his, Oscar Peterson, made a better small group mate. When Oscar played with Ben or Prez or others, he could hang back and comp awhile without drawing attention to his own playing. Art alone was truly amazing with his speed and ideas but Oscar could accompany singers and other instrumentalists and let the spotlight fall on someone else. For me, Oscar could have the great solo and still provide the tasteful piano support for the other musicians.”

Replies…

“You bring up the 'point of the century'. Assuming Tatum could comp, why didn't he here? And since he is/was (arguably) the single greatest musician ever, maybe Webster didn't care??! I heard Webster had a temper. I'm guessing he wouldn't let anyone walk on him.... maybe except THE Art Tatum.

G-d love to know more about this session. It's the most uncanny album I've ever heard, where solo's are exchanged in a duet form, yet the piano player refuses to stop soloing! One of my favorite all-time records.”

“Oscar learned a lot from Tatum and would be the first to say Tatum was a solo pianist. He wasn't a trio player, quartet player or big band pianist. He was a solo player with not just technique, but an uncanny harmonic sophistication that preceded and inspired bebop. What you're hearing here with Webster was Tatum fitting in best he could. Yet we all still want to hear the next few bars whenever it's Art.”

I did read an anecdote about Ben Webster getting annoyed at how Tatum “accompanied” him and told Tatum to “back off,” but don’t know if this was the session when that happened. If it was, it didn’t have much of an effect lol

But the best example of Tatum playing over a soloist can be heard on “Deep Purple” from the Tatum Group Masterpieces where, toward the end of the track, Tatum “accompanies” Harry Edison by playing about 20 times as many notes as the trumpet player.
