Gluons
In addition to spin, gluons come in three colors, red green or blue. These are not genuine colors, as photons emitted by quarks are likely energetic beyond the visible range. Instead they are analogous to electron/positron charge, except there are three “charges,” not polar charges. So we identify gluon flavors as one of the three primary colors.

We could have gone with salt, sweet, sour, etc., but the way colors combine is more meaningful. Remember, gluons do not emit photons. Like photons, gluons are vector bosons, so their spin is 1.

Just as photons carry or mediate the electromagnetic force (though photons carry no charge themselves), gluons mediate the strong nuclear interaction. Quarks form hadrons, which are any particles comprised of quark/antiquark pairs (mesons) or three quarks (baryons), or higher quark arrangements. Five quarks can form a particle. Baryons are any odd numbered arrangement of quarks. The two stable baryons are the proton (up up down) and neutron (down down up). All the rest rapidly decompose.

Gluons hold quarks together. Gluons are the glue that bind quarks into configurations.
