Movies we've watched
Cry Freedom --- It just ended.

This is an import6ant movie of our times that is set in 1977 South Africa.

The movie is based on two books written by Donald Woods, who escaped from South Africa.

"The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" - great Wes Anderson film. Title is a play on "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau." They search for the rare jaguar shark, which is really cool looking.

Most Wes Anderson films are really good. Another I saw recently is "The Grand Budapest Hotel."

for some reason, I will usually watch the prequel to "Alien," ..."Prometheus." Maybe the aerial photography of Iceland in the beginning gets me hooked. The movie has problems. But the positives win out. A decent sci-fi adventure.

"A Face In The Crowd"
Was eerily prescient and unquestionably timely for a movie made in 1957...
I was encouraged to seek it out after reading this Jake Tapper piece in "The Atlantic"

Sedagive?
so funny. Peter Boyle is hilarious throughout this scene.
Terry Garr putting the chair out is pretty good, too.

Twelve Monkeys
I love just about everything Terry Gilliam does.

The Fisher King is another good one. 12 Monkeys concerns a man seeking answers to the end of the world. His psychiatrist admonishes him that "no one is going to die.". Everything he thinks is all part of an elaborate fantasy he and another mental patient of hers concocted, feeding off each other's drug fueled delusions.

Kind of fitting for the current time.

Dr. Strangelove coming on local PBS channel in 20 minutes. may have to tune in. I've seen it several times. but it's one of those movies that holds up to occasional viewing. trying to think of the comedian who recently mentioned that Peter Sellers was their biggest influence.

ah... Sacha Baron Cohen.

good comment by Will Ferrell, that Sellers could be "extremely subtle and over-the-top all at the same time.” www.yahoo.com

"Unforgiven." won several oscars and other awards. starring and directed by Clint Eastwood. also starring Gene Hackman, Richard Harris, and Morgan Freeman.

a western with unexpected themes, made in 1992. I had been lukewarm toward this movie. but it grows on me more and more each time I see it.

Not bad. Acting a bit weak, but overall worthy

Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster reminisce about
"The Silence of The Lambs," beginning at about 15:30
www.yahoo.com

just saw him in "Remains of the Day," last week. that's another that gets better with repeated viewings. good story, if often frustrating. and great acting by Hopkins, Emma Thompson, and James Fox. Also a small part by Michael Lonsdale, who was excellent opposite Fox's brother in "The Day of The Jackal."

Carol Kane, who I still think of as Latka's girlfriend on Taxi,
is pretty funny as a Zombie in "The Dead Don't Die."
...since it's Halloween.

"The Mission"
Jeremy Irons and Robert de Niro as Jesuits in South America, set in the mid-eighteenth century. Film made in the 1980's, with Irons and de Niro at their peak. Supporting actors also excellent.

Absolutely brilliant thinking person's film. The three clerics represent three radically different views on what is the 'right thing to do'; let the watcher decide which should be adopted and why. I suspect Zorro, Apatzer and I would settle on three different answers.

Add to that some glorious cinematography, a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack and many piercing insights into human nature.

At Play in the Fields of the Lord
This one is set in South Africa, a missionary theme. It is hard to find, I managed to snag a relatively poor quality copy. I should watch it. The book was apparently pretty good.

All star cast--Daryl Hannah, uhm, six strong actors.

I think the gal from Misery is in it, as I recall.

Documentaries
"What We Do in the Dark" is a wonderful film, I believe it is set in Australia. Really well done. And educational. I thought it was a documentary, because I saw it at a small independent art movie house, and it was shot that way. If there are a lot of distractions while you're watching it, you'll miss out on most of the story. Extremely subtle. I hope I'm not wrecking it for anyone.

Also "Cane Toads"
I still can't work out if this is a genuine documentary written with a Monty Python sense of humour, or a comedy written as if an Attenborough-style documentary to suck the viewer into a 'gotcha!' moment for taking it seriously for so long.

Region 4
The Cane Toads DVD is PAL format, and you have to flip a bit to render it watchable in the US.

It is illegal to sell DVD players in Australia that recognize Region bytes. For that reason I want to buy an Australian DVD player. Will have to swap out the electrical cord, I guess maybe.

It is always something, right?

I haven't used my multi-region dvd player in several years. something prompted me to open the battery door on the remote. of course I had let the batteries go bad and leak a bit. they didn't come out cleanly. hopefully I haven't ruined the remote. going to have to clean it up and possibly try to repair a spring or contact. not that I need to use the machine. but I do want to know if it still works.

caught "Most Wanted Man," one of Philip Seymour Hoffman's last films, on cable yesterday. a very good non-flashy adaptation of a John Le Carre novel.

I've seen several Le Carre adaptations. Favorite was probably "The Night Manager," a British TV mini-series that ran several years ago.

We just saw Hoffman
In Moneyball. He’s a great actor. That’s a pretty good movie too

Dear Liza
Another Philip Seymour Hoffman film. Just a brutal film. A web designer’s wife has killed herself. She left him a note he can’t bear to read. His life falls apart. Not a happy movie. He was amazing though.

I like Moneyball, too.

I saw the middle of a very strange Philip Seymour Hoffman movie, "The Master." also stars Joaquin Phoenix. out there but really good and interesting. I want to catch it from the beginning.

Phoenix's character has problems and mixes "drinks" with chemicals or solvents, etc. he has on hand, advising fellow imbibers that they won't be "poisoned" if they drink it correctly, meaning not too much for the given mixture. Hoffman is sort of a partial crackpot psychiatrist leech cult leader, yet with charisma and actual talent and insight into people.
